I was wondering if it is normal in a PA-28 161 to require full nose down trim with flaps(on landing approach). A rental I've been flying recently is confusing me a bit. I would typically expect to feed some nose up trim when slowing to land, and end up on the ground with the trim 'nose up from neutral". But in this one, I'm having to feed nose down trim to remove considerable control pressure once I deploy the flaps. Once on the ground you'll be at full nose down to the stop. Since I find it trimmed this way when I get in before a flight, I take it that everyone else is having to do this also. So, normal? Also it seems that the neutral trim position isn't centered properly. What air speed would you expect the trim indicator to be at neutral(as marked in the 'window"? I tried flying straight and level down to 70kias and noting trim position, I never got past halfway between DN and N. I would expect to be a bit 'nose up of N(neutral)' at that speed with no flaps, no?

FYI, loading was full fuel and just me up front, 140lbs. No extra weight in the baggage area either.

So is this thing out of rig or is this normal for pa-28 161?

Not normal.

With full flaps and 2 man sized people in the front seat you should observe the trim to be very close to the “N” on the trim position indicator.

Have you confirmed the actual travel is near full forward or just the indicator near full forward?

At a normal book approach speed, normal load, you shouldn’t be max forward trim

Sounds like the trim indicator needs to be fixed. For takeoff, I'll set the trim in the cherokee then during flight and landing by feel, not by looking at the indicator.

Check the weight and balance too.

I can always tell when the Other Guy has been flying the Arrow. It is in full forward trim because he had his dive gear in the luggage area.

Easy enough to check on preflight. Set trim to neutral and the tab should be in-line with the stabilator close to the middle of it's range.

Yea, I was thinking it might be the little needle indicator thing that was off till I hit the stop, the wheel wouldn't spin any more nose down.
