These digital v/a meters are about $10 on Amazon and a bit less on ebay. The only problem with them is that the ammeter function splits the negative pole of the battery from the negative supply line to the load to insert the ammeter shunt. That's a problem in a metal structure (car, aircraft, aluminum outhouse...) in that the metal structure is usually a common negative bus and the shunt is located in the positive lead.

Anybody ever seen one of these little Chinglish meters that sense current from the positive supply? Even at triple the price it would solve a problem for me.

Not for DC. Transformers don't work on DC.

It says DC. Must not be a transformer as such but another means of sensing DC current. I have one in my camper that passes the battery cable (either one) through a ring and measures current. It also displays voltage, battery charge state (calculated via AH in/out) and has alarms that can be set.
