Any suggestions for neat places to fly to where I can camp or hike from in the Northeast? I know there's not much. The only place I know of offhand is Marcy Field (1I1) in Keene, NY, which is adjacent to the Porter Mt. trailhead in the Adirondack High Peaks wilderness area, and that's in my planes for next year, a quick overnight backpacking trip, but I'm looking for other places as well. Short is OK, grass is preferred, basically any place a Cub can go is OK for my Hatz.

What type of plane and what are you comfortable with?

As I said above, short is OK, grass is preferred, basically any place a Cub can go is OK for my Hatz... though I've only owned it for a month so I'm still getting used to just what the plane can do. Right now I regularly land on a 900' patch of grass (with no trees) alongside the paved runway.

In that case carry falls is great spot to camp, remote and fun, it is getting cold and is deer season so just keep that in mind.

Another one is basin harbor, might not be as primitive like camping, but still fun, might be closed for the season, also remeber heavy rain + grass

Where is an airstrip at Carry Falls? The only thing I see anywhere near there is what google earth identifies as "Blake Falls Airport", which looks like an abandoned strip, nothing nearby on the chart.

Basin Harbor looks cool, not backcountry by any stretch ($300± per night at the nearby inn), but my wife is intrigued by the idea of meeting me there with the RV and staying at the state park just south of there...

I think we might have a miscommunication on backcountry.

The sand where I dropped the measure, basically find a good spot, do a good site survey and there ya go.

Right, maybe "backcountry" was the wrong word. I'm meaning established airstrips, public or private, in close proximity to hiking or camping, like Marcy Field I mentioned above. When I said "any place a Cub can go" I was thinking a stock J-3, not a Super Cub with big tires. But it does look like a fun place for a small bushplane like a properly set up Kitfox or such... if it's legal to land there?

A puppet quick pics...

0NY0. It's my back yard.
Cool! I spent a fair amount of time in your area when I was a kid, skiing at Gore with my parents. And GE even shows a biplane sitting on the grass! I'll have to drop in someday...

Any hiking trailheads in the vicinity of the airport?

That's an N3N-3. There are also two Meyers OTWs and a Pitts S-1 based there. A couple C150s, a couple 172s, a soon to be fully restored J-3, a Champ, and a Super Cub. Lots of activity for a little grass strip.

You can hike right from the airstrip. Depending on what you want to do, you could start at the SE end and hike on a vast network of old logging roads and xc ski trails, or head over the the Ski Bowl and hike that rather large trail system. You could hike the Schaeffer Trail to the summit of Gore after you get tied down. It's about a 1/2 mile from the strip to the trailhead.

It’s legal to land at carry, also normally hard packed enough for lots of planes without Bush wheels, just depends. But I gotcha, not sure of any non private established grass/dirt strips up there
