New iPhone Transfering Info From Old

Any advice on transferring my contact list, pics, etc from my old iPhone 5 to the XR? Looks to be fairly simple with iCloud or thru iTunes. Mainly I need the contact list to transfer. Skeptic in me (if I fk it up) says I should write down my contact list but it’s quite a list.
 
Yes, what @sferguson524 said. A tethered backup (connected to your computer with iTunes) will be faster, but both ways work fine. It will download the apps from the cloud, so they will take a bit longer.
 
Not everything gets transferred, I lost some iBooks, stored web passwords...
 
Contact list - are people still using those without the cloud? My phone or iPad can end up off a cliff and I won't lose my contacts.
 
Mark— Backup your current iPhone to either iCloud or iTunes.

When you get the new phone, just retrieve the backup during the set-up process and it will recover everything that was on the old phone. Apple has made it a seamless process.

Cloud backup of the old one, then set up the new one from that. With good wifi its quick and easy.

This. Especially the back up first.
 
I just went through this frustrating exercise last week.

1. Back up your old phone.

2. Be prepared to have Apple force you to change your Apple password.

3. If the IOS on your old phone is newer than the new phone IOS (can happen) you will be instructed to set up the new phone as a new phone first, and to upgrade the IOS prior to restoring from the old phone backup.

4. Sign out of Find Iphone if you are signed in.

5. You may be prompted for a password to restore your new phone from the old phone backup. This is not your Apple password. This is a separate password you had to generate when you backed up your old phone at some point in time, probably the first time you did it, and you probably forgot it. Hope you didn't.

I did forget mine. I entered a "standard" password I might have used and thank god it worked. It took me all afternoon and lots of &%(#*$^ to get this done.
 
I haven'used a cable to do anything iDevice for several years. I take a pic on my phone and it shows up on my Mac and iPad. All backed up in the cloud in the background. Same if I download music. Love it.
 
if you back up to your computer in iTunes encrypted with a password, it should also backup most of your accounts' password. Just don't forget that password, there is no remedy to reset it.
 
Whatever way you do it, do an iCloud backup first.

Apple has made it stupid easy. Assuming you kept your 5 up to date and have iOS 11 or better, you literally just place the phones next to each other and it transfers everything over on startup to your new phone.

I have not connected my phone to iTunes in many years and go through a new one about every two years.

Then you will need to do an iCloud backup. Check in iCould everything that you wanna sync then once done you just restore the new iPhone from iCloud backup during setup. It may take a bit but it will all transfer over. If you have not keep photos synced it will take a while to backup.

Only thing I usually loose is text message archives.
