I’m new to the whole aviation thing and started training about a month ago. Went for my medical after a few hours in the air not thinking anything of it as I am in good shape, or so I thought. I have had 2 pulmonary embolism events in the past, the last being almost 3 years ago. I am on blood thinners and in the process of getting my records together to send in. The doctor has encouraged me to continue with the process as he believes I will receive a special issuance. I have all the tests, etc. and everything falls within normal ranges. I have thought about going the sport pilot route now, but worry I am SOL since I may be on the radar. Is this true and does anyone have any experience with blood clots and getting a license? I was hoping to get a ppl to aid with work travel, that really caused all my health issues to begin with. Any advice is appreciated.

A formerly active member here (many years ago) did get recertified after a PE, though she was down for a few years as I recall. So *one* PE would not be hopeless, but two in your history might be more difficult.
Does your AME specialize in difficult cases? If so, you might be well advised to trust him. If not, your best bet is to seek one out. There are at least two AMEs on here who do specialize in difficult cases: @lbfjrmd (a.k.a. Dr. Lou Fowler) and @bbchien (a.k.a. Dr. Bruce Chien). Dr. Bruce is best contacted via his website, http://www.aeromedicaldoc.com, and is well-known as one of the best in the business, and will surely help you get certified IF it is possible and IF you are 100% honest and forthcoming with him.

If there has been pulmonary embolism, remember that FAA requires a board dertified pulmonologist for the return to service sign-off.
