New Plate Format

I like the airport diagram sketch...and I find the new information too cluttered.

Hadn't seen the offer to take the survey until you mentioned it. Thanks for sharing the link.

Anyone else got this survey from AOPA?

They’re trying to get rid of the airport diagram sketch.

Says there will be an airport diagram for every airport while the one on the actual approach chart will be removed. I could live with this change, means the airport diagram on one page, more detail, etc.

I took it. I like the idea of simplifying things, but I think they are going the other way here. I suggested coming up with a simpler system of creating the alternate minimums. Maybe just make it a rule that if using alternate barometer, or out of service ALS, double the regular minimums. Or maybe not double, but a blanket rule for all. Some airport's plates get so confusing, and sometimes the difference is splitting hairs.

I like that they removed the paragraph on top and translated it into the values near the minimums. I don’t like that they plan to remove the small sketch.

Thanks for the link, I puked all over their new ideas. Change for the sake of change is not necessarily good. Neither is putting all of those numbers crammed so close together, so that we can bounce our finger onto the wrong number.

Putting the airport diagram on another page, paper or electronic, just means that many of us will not be able to see it until we pull off the runway and stop. Hoping that tower tells us if we are lined up wrong is not a good plan . . . . Many towers close, and only a tiny fraction of airports even have towers (10%? 15%?). Keep everything I need on one page!

Nope, I like the diagram in the plate, specifically with the little arrow showing where the approach comes in.

This. The little diagram helps understand what the runway environment will look like on breakout.

Same here, I am visual person and having that as a quick reference to cross check both orientation and TDZ elevation is a very valuable tool for me.

Of course, one has to remember that were talking about the FAA...if the survey says most pilots like the diagram, then bye bye diagram! LOL

The industry reps at the semi-annual Aeronautical Charting Forum all agreed on removing the "mini" airport diagram for a full page (like Jeppesen has done since the radio range days).

That was the exact feedback I put in the survey. Like someone else said, solution in search of a problem. AKA some fool looking to justify their job....

Less likely. FAA has put in a lot of effort over the past decade to overhaul how the interact with pilots and provide information. Everything from FAR rewrites, to medical information systems...
This is just an off shot of that effort.
Note: half of the effort has been forced by Congress.

Would love to know how many (if any) congressmen(women) have a pilot license and actually are active in GA.

The proposed changes are an improvement. But honestly why would I want to look at the alternate missed procedure diagram immediately after I read the missed procedure text. The order of missed diagram and alternate missed diagram is reversed.

Also I I fly a plane with DME DME do I really need a note telling me DME DME is NA for a RNAV (GPS) approach?

Those "DME/DME RNP-0.3 NA" notes have been gradually going away, for procedures as they are amended, starting several months ago.

And "RNP APCH" is being added, which most pilots won't understand. Sort of like the dearth of info about all the ARINC RNAV leg types.

Did the AOPA say if the survey results would be made public at some point?

I am fine with the change (s) if they put the full size diagram on the back of every approach. This of course would not cut down on paper usage... so the FAA will probably approve it and give themselves a pat on the back.

The diagram is useful, especially if you planning to circle and in actual, you’ll now what to expect to see, REILs or ALS, VASI PAPI etc. If you find that data useful, and it is, you’ll have to look up the diagram chart .... it’s an unnecessary step...like someone else said...a solution looking for a (non-existent) problem.
