So I have a plane all day on a Sunday coming up in a few weeks. My intention had been to fly from TTA, just south of Raleigh, to First Flight, but I found out they are still not reopened after the storm. So now I need a new destination.

C172, 110 kts and I am looking 2-3 hours away. A museum or restaurant would be nice, short nature trail, just some reason to go.

Suggestions?

09J Jekyll Island? Wonderful bike trails and a number of restaurant options. I don't think they had fuel at the airport when I was there a few years back.

CHA. I’ll take you to the best BBQ joint in town.

Right area, but land at St Simon's Island (KSSI) and go down the street and eat at Southern Soul BBQ. It's within walking distance of the airport. I've done it twice.

I’m definitely trying to get somewhere near the coast to show my support. And beer, but mostly support.

Do people know where you’re flying out of?

@Ryanb That's just over an hour from me. I may hook up there with you in the future. That would be a nice little food run. CHA or FGU better to fly in to?
Sounds good! Do let me know!

FGU would really be the better option. That BBQ joint I mentioned is literally less than one mile from CHA which is why I mentioned it. Wilson Air is the FBO @ CHA, and I’ve heard nothing but positive stories on them.

@Ryanb Definitely. Leaving for vacation for about 10 days or so Friday but we'll plan something when I get back.

Looks about 13 miles or so from FGU, so not bad at all.

KSSI is one of my favorites, have to agree the BBQ is great. Good overnight stop can walk to two hotels.

One vote for CHA over FGU. CHA is easy easy to fly into. Did some training out of FGU, and just never warmed up to that airport.

Sounds good!

Maybe we can coerce @Bill Jennings over to join us!

@Ryanb The more the merrier!

As a little bit of advanced planning, when is the best time for you normally? I'm pretty open any time, any day of the week. I assume we could meet around noon. Thing is, if it's a Saturday my club is bad about being booked on Saturday. Right now the only Saturday that's open is Nov. 3 between now and the end of November. I'm going to go ahead and schedule the plane for that Saturday, but we don't have to do it then. When we decide I'll just cancel the plane for that Saturday if need be.

Sure. Weekends are typically best, usually Saturday over Sunday, but I could swing either day. During the week, Thursday’s after 12 would be the best day, so if you decided to come up for lunch, that would work for me.

I’m unsure on any fee’s at Wilson Air, might want to call and check. Biggest thing with FGU is that it’s situated between two mountain ridges and it has an unusual slope to the runway, so you can get some exciting effects, especially on windy days. CHA is VERY easy to get into though. It’s a pretty sleepy Charlie on most days.

@Cluemeister Any fees for just a couple of hours?

Once I've been charged by Wilson, and three times not. I would call ahead and check their policy. They do have a nice crew car, so that might end up being cheaper than an Uber. If you choose FGU, last time I flew there the AWOS was not working, and the winds there are frequently different than CHA. I would fly over and check the windsock and land accordingly.

The date I'm flying is a Sunday, the 14th.

I had totally forgotten about Southern Soul at SSI - I agree, great food! Not crazy about smelling like smoke on the whole flight back, but I think they fixed that, didn't they? We have family in St Simons and I haven't heard any reports of damage.

Of the two, I'm inclined to try something new and go with Rib and Loin. If others are joining, my intention is to land at CHA around 11. If I know others are coming, I can hold up and go together in a car, it's a 4 minute drive. Otherwise, it's a 30 minute walk.

MQI? They have crew and rental cars. Or you can walk over to the aquarium.

I’m good for weekends, not so good for weekdays.

I could swing by and pick you up if needed. Hopefully we’ll get some others to chime in...could make this a real fly-in shin dig. (Drive-in for me :))

Up for some BBQ at CHA? 10-19-18

Can’t do 10/19 as the wife and I have a three day weekend trip planned to celebrate our anniversary. I might be able to 10/14 as @bflynn suggested.

I really like CHA too. It’s been a frequent stop flying back and forth to NC. They usually bring out a red rug and park me right in front of their doors! They’ll even send you a “thank you for choosing us” card in the mail a few weeks later. Great place, nice FBO, easy in/out, and good people.

I would meet up but that's the last day of my vacation. Won't be at home.

T-45 or Twinkie? Seems like they’ve always got T-45s or T-6s there.

To close this up - flight is tomorrow, weather over the mountains looks less than desirable for VFR. I suspect the words "mountain obscuration" will probably be used.

Thanks for the suggestions, we are heading to St Simons for BBQ. If anyone else will be in the area, should be landing around 11:00 and at the restaurant 30 minutes later? I will be wearing a ballcap, shorts and a polo. The ball cap will probably be a submarine cap.

If you need an excuse to fly, here it is.
