I'm looking for places within 150nm or so of UIN.

We fly to ALN all the time and there is a great restaurant on that field which is why we always go there but.... we ALWAYS go there. I kinda want to have some other go-tos. Where do the other area people like to fly for lunch/dinner?

Jubelt’s bakery/diner is about a mile up the road from the Litchfield (3LF) airport. Not sure if they have a crew car.
I’m guessing you know about the airport steakhouse at Mattoon (KMTO).
Too bad the restaurant here at Bloomington (KBMI) closed.

I had not been to the steakhouse at Mattoon yet... might have to try that one. The big problem I seem to run into is that while there are several directories for this stuff it seems that more than half the restaurants one finds are closed.

JEF has a diner style restaurant on the field
MTO has a steakhouse on the field (@baboss and I met there for lunch once)
DXE has a great breakfast/lunch restaurant on the field
CGI has a great breakfast/lunch restaurant on the field w/all you can eat catfish on Fridays
I hear there's something near the airport at SIK...not sure what...
MVN has a restaurant on the field
SAR has numerous restaurants within easy walking distance, Lollie's Cafe is right across the street

I've been to all except JEF...some better than others...all acceptable...

BTW...you guys are stealing our airport manager, azzholes! She's a good one, very knowledgeable, driven and also...dare I say...pretty easy on the eyes. The young lady really has her sh*t together. I'm confident that she'll do a great job at UIN. We will certainly miss her.

KMTO is definitely open.
Holler if you're going and might be able to meet up with you.
AOPA fly-in at Carbondale coming right up too.
KMVN I'm not sure about. Seems it may be closed.
@LoLPilot may have info on MVN...and also may be interested in meeting up at KMTO.
KSIK is Lambert's. They shuttle you back and forth.
Good food.
Thrown rolls.
Y'all come back now ya hear

Supposedly at Lambert’s they also take you in through the kitchen if you arrive at the restaurant via the airport.

Never been to KMVN. I can vouch for the High Flyer’s Grill at KALN. It’s worth a stop and they have a patio that looks out in the ramp.

From what I have been told as of November of last year, 3LF has a car: https://www.airportcourtesycars.com/illinois.html

Decatur, IL has a restaurant on the field although I haven’t been there yet. I’ve actually been bring friends to Quincy for a bite.

150 miles keeps you away from the Chicago area and there are several up there.

Just don't take your kids if you go!!!

He ran Lambert's Cafe in Ozark, now he's accused of trafficking two children for sex.

The son of Lambert's Cafe founder was indicted this month on five sex crimes, including two counts of sex trafficking of a child.

Court documents say Benjamin P. Lambert, 50, enticed two children to participate in a sex act for money and also filmed sexual contact involving the two children.

Court documents say Lambert had a photo of one of the children posing nude in front of a mirror and used his home address in Ozark for prostitution purposes.

The alleged sex crimes took place between April and August of 2015, court documents say.

The most recently available documents filed with the Missouri Secretary of State's Office say Lambert is the president of the Lambert's Cafe in Ozark.

The News-Leader called the Ozark restaurant Friday night for comment and was referred to a manager.

The manager said "no comment" and hung up.

I just saw an article from one of the local station’s websites about that last night. Wowza.

You could also fly past ALN to CPS, take a crew car, and have all of St. Louis's restaurants available (Pappy's, Bogart's, the entire Hill neighborhood, Crown Candy Kitchen, Baily's Range, Sugarfire, Molly's, Tuckers, McGurks). Those a just the places close by.

A meetup there wouldn't be too exciting of a flight for me though.

There are other parts in the article..

Benjamin Lambert once had been involved in managing the Ozark location, which opened in the 1990s. Lambert’s Cafe issued a statement regarding the indictment on its Facebook page.

“We were surprised and saddened to hear the news and charges of Ben’s indictment. While Ben is the son of Norman Lambert, he has not been active in the management of the store in recent years,” the statement read. “This indictment is strictly related to Ben’s personal life, but, if asked, we will cooperate with authorities.

“Lambert’s would never condone behavior of this nature. Lambert’s Cafe will continue to be a destination for family entertainment.”

So what's your point? He's a Lambert...translation..an owner.

Just one more in a very long list of reasons why you won't see me in one.

It's funny how they state "oooohhhh...myyyyyy...Lambert's would neeeever condone such behavior" when he's a Lambert.

So if your adult kid robbed someone the police should arrest you too?

My brother has done things I would never do, or condone.
It's no reflection on me whatsoever.

Maybe he went of the deep end lately..who knows.
The rest of the staff shouldn't have to pay for his mistakes/bad behavior if they aren't guilty.
Either way, you have the right to condemn the whole organization as you see fit. I just don't feel that way currently, and will probably eat there again.

Ummmmm, daddy can't be punished. Daddy's dead. Norm died in the 90's. So who do you think likely owns it now? Or at least partially owns it. Managing the Ozark store is ancillary.

Yep. Founder is dead. All articles say “managed” or “ran” Ozark location. If he was the owner of the organization you can bet the media would be all over it. I haven’t been motivated to drag my butt out there but I’m gonna have to go pay a visit now just to show support for the current owners and employees. Kind like how I still occasionally drink Bud if I’m in a cheap skunky beer mood, despite Augie IV’s helicopter antics.

Nope, founder's son is dead. Well, okay, founder is also dead!

Founder's grandson and likely one of the current owners (though I can't find proof of that on the interwebs) is a child sex trafficker.

I'd be curious to know for sure if someone can find it.

It’s almost certainly an LLC, S-Corp, or Corporation. Meaning the grandson may have some stock in the company but doesn’t own it

You really have no clue, do you? Privately held corporations are not the same animal as publicly held corporations. Sure the stockholders technically "don't own it" but I've had three...two as as sole stockholder....and it's simply a liability shield (oh and it cuts your tax burden by about 50% if you have a great accountant). But the reality is that I "owned them" since I owned 100% of the stock. Don't know how else it could be described.

Oh, and I found it, each restaurant is a separate company and according to the MO SOS website, he is secretary of two companies (one of only two officers) and president of the third. He is a member of a three member board of directors of all three companies.

The article I pasted said he was president of the Ozark store but I missed that.

Nahhhhhhh...he's not an owner...

Drawing parallels between someone accused (and exonerated IIRC) of flying a chopper while intoxicated to someone who trafficks children for sex.

Got it. Yep, those two or roughly equal on the despicable chart.

Nah you're right, I don't have a clue. I just have two degrees in business and am working on a third one, and am a partner in an LLP. He is not the owner of the business. If anything he's a part owner. So if he is President.... he's not the sole owner of the organization. Even if an org is set up as an LLC the owner(s) probably operate as a partnership at the minimum unless it's an organization like a dentist's office or the like. And there's also the 1983 car crash, the 1985 chase, and the whole o/d thing in 2010, but I was just pointing out the helicopter fun as the most recent. I'm hoping you haven't cracked open a Bud since the 80's. :cheerswine:

You forget about them having Harry Caray run over in downtown for boinkin' one of their wives! Or so the story goes And Gussie stepped in and helped big time with the recovery to atone for his son's misdeed. :)

This is a bit of STL trivia I was not aware of. Do learn me!

Rumor at the time had it that he was boinkin' Jr's wife...or so the story goes And Gussie stepped in and helped big time with the recovery to atone for his son's misdeed. :)

In November 1968, Caray was nearly killed after being struck by an automobile while crossing a street in St. Louis; he suffered two broken legs in the accident, but recuperated in time to return to the broadcast booth for the start of the 1969 season.[7] Cardinals' president Gussie Busch, then CEO of owner Anheuser-Busch, spent lavishly to ensure Caray recovered, flying him on the company's planes to a company facility in Florida to rehabilitate and recuperate.[8] On Opening Day, fans cheered when he dramatically threw aside the two canes he had been using to cross the field and continued to the broadcast booth under his own power.

Oh...and that opening day was likely the first time he was ever sober enough to walk under his own power!!

Used to love listening to games on the radio as a kid...he was nothing but a series of slurs by the 5th or 6th inning and Jack had to take over all duties!

I've heard he was a trip while commentating, but I didn't know about the whole car thing! That's insane! I've heard the usual "urban legends" about the Busch's but that's a new one on me.

Sheeeeet...that's nuthen'. I have both a design and construction management degree combined with just under 40 years of experience in my field, and it still don't know anything about construction. Just ask anyone who's worked with me, they'll tell you!

Ain't nobody out there actually knows sheet about nothin.

As the old joke goes...

Architects or generalists. They go to school and learn a little bit about a whole bunch of topics. And as they go through their career they learn less and less about more and more till they know nothing about everything.

Engineers on the other hand are specialist. They go to school learning a whole bunch about very little. And as they go through their careers, they learn more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing.

A poor prognosis for someone going into Ops Research! :(

I would strongly recommend going to Lambert's at KSIK. They shuttle you to the restaurant, take you in the side door to bypass the waiting crowds, and shuttle you back! On Sundays there's always a full shuttle van coming and going all day long! Excellent perk for the pilots!!
