I'll try to make this as short as possible. I signed a sales agreement 3 months ago on a new plane, it seems like weekly I was told "It'll be ready next week". The only thing I had planned was a trip to the beach with my family several months in the future, so not a big deal I thought...plenty of time. Well, it comes time for the trip and the plane still isn't ready, so I drive with my wife and 4 year to the beach, which isn't the most fun thing in the world (the drive, not the beach, although not a huge beach guy..but I digress).

During this time period, I received notice that my airport where my hangar is will be closing for runway work for two months, starting yesterday. Bah, okay, that's really bad timing and now I have no place to store my new airplane.

Regardless of the hangar issue, I buy a plane ticket, get a car rental and hotel room setup over the weekend and I get a CFI squared away there to cover the insurance requirements before I fly back. Well, I receive a phone call this morning that the airport where the plane is located just put out a NOTAM; airport closing for two days for rehab work. It's closed specifically on the only two days that I had arranged to be there, what are the odds?

I guess I'll try this again next week, but I'm wondering if maybe this isn't the plane for me.

Yes. This plane is cursed. Pay me 1 AMU and I will take it away from you.

Someone trying to tell you something? Yeah, get that plane out of there before something goes wrong!

Congrats on the purchase. You'll make it.

Also, I hovered my finger over the trip insurance for quite a while...I chose poorly.

New to me, sorry.
Wait, why did you opt to buy a used airplane that's not airworthy? Especially with 3 months of fixing stuff? Who will be the suicidal test pilot who makes sure that thing flies after the grease monkeys done wrenching on it and say it's "done and safe"?
Good luck with your purchase but please do be careful.

It has passed annual. One of the reasons it took so long, I believe, is because the shop didn't pencil whip anything. While annoying, I prefer to receive an airplane that's in good shape rather than an airplane quickly. The shop also has a stellar reputation with the type, which makes me feel better about the whole situation too. Lastly, I have an ABS/BPPP CFI who's going to go over the plane thoroughly as well as perform a test flight before I take possession (and do my transition training). I do appreciate your concern, it's certainly a concern of mine as well.

Why wouldn't you have the seller MOVE the plane prior to airport closing to the next field over?

It seems like the NOTAM caught them off guard, it sounded like they were unaware until I received the call this morning. The weather there has been marginal too, so perhaps that played into it as well?

Good luck with the airplane, when you finally get it.

Trip insurance does not usually allow you to cancel for a refund unless there is a medical issue, including note from the doctor. YMMV of course.

Thanks Clue, that makes me feel better actually. I guess I didn't waste money on trip insurance, so something went right.

Congrats! That will be a nice plane.
Yes, buying any airplane entails risks and unplanned expenses.
Despite the most meticulous of efforts to mitigate these, stuff happens.
I must make the effort to blog my airplane purchase from this summer.
Including how I arrived to find a pool of oil under the plane.

Check with your airport manager. Ours let planes that were based at the airport take off and land on the taxiway while they were working on the runway. If yours is going to be down for months there is a chance they will have something set up for the planes that are based there.

I wish I was rich enough to buy a plane remotely and just wait for it to “be ready”

Unless you get hands on with this plane it’s going to be a very expensive experience I’d wager.

Unfortunately they're closing the taxiway as well during the rehab, the notifications from the manager were very specific about moving planes completely off the field prior to the construction if you needed access to it.

I do have my checkbook waiting patiently on the sideline, just in case. I have found that it usually takes a little bit of elbow grease along with a nice supply of wallet grease to get a new plane in shape after a purchase.

I arrived in Dallas today in furtherance of this airplane buying adventure and picked up my rental car from DFW at ~ 5:00PM. To all the guys on POA who live in Dallas: the traffic here sure does provide a person with an ample amount of time to ponder life while sitting in their car.

Sounds like a midnight departure to me......and arrival!

Just another perk of living in the country! No traffic, few neighbors to annoy you, no tower and few traffic conflicts at the local aerodrome. :D
