The next time a cop tells me their job is really dangerous...

“Yeah? I’m at number three on the list.”

The More You Know. Hahaha.

There's a job that's about 8889 per 100,000

Wonder where steeplejack/tower jock resides on that list...Used to do it, but no more...

Better/easier communication and interaction with the Captain in the left seat.
More importantly, it allows the Captain to more easily see the Engineers's panel. Same reason you rarely see circuit breakers on the left side of the cockpit.

I don't trust anyone who can't find current stats. You do realize this is 2018, right? 2017 stats are available.

That list is BOGUS! AND it’s outdated. GMAB Flight Engineers! And where the heck are Fireman?

Dang, I worked the number one job one summer. I only cut the tree up when it was on the ground though, I didn't climb them so maybe that doesn't count. You do have to keep situational awareness when they fall which I realize is an obvious understatement.

I've been to about 1900 feet, but was much younger and fit back then. Was amazed at how easy it was to leave fingerprints in steel too.....
My palms are sweating just *thinking about* being strapped to a giant lightning rod at 1900 feet!! No way!

“Yeah? I’m at number three on the list.”

Oh? Last time I check I thought you were some kinda tech nerd. “Job” would indicate you do it for a living.

What is it with all the random BS against cops? Nobody jumps up and randomly posts sh@t about IT nerds. Don’t like us? Great. I don’t care. Keep you bullsh#t opinions to yourself.

I'm glad my cop job isn't dangerous...I mean, in my 27 years I've been shot at twice, but they didn't hit me (although the one time they hit the car I was driving 4 times)...and I've been stabbed twice but hey, one time it barely went through my ballistic vest. And there was the MMA guy I was arresting that repeatedly beat the back of my head on a trailer hitch during our fight but hey, he didn't kill me either, so no danger there. Then there was the stolen Dodge truck that t-boned me, but I survived, so I'm good. Then there was the suicidal guy that answered the door with the AR15, that I grabbed right through the screen door, but I mean, he was only going to hurt himself, right? Or the several house fires that I arrived at before the FD, that I went inside to get people out, but I'm sure that smoke wasn't that bad. I'm sure glad I'm not in danger like Denverpilot.

I took denverpilot's post to be tongue in cheek.

But yeah - I'm not going to tell a cop that somehow my job is more dangerous than his/hers.

Lol, this post was certainly in jest, a few of you guys went straight to DEFCON level: butthurt instantly!

Tell you what, when you hear this ‘tongue in cheek stuff’ on practically a daily basis it gets old.

Yesterday a ran in a benefit 5K/10K in honor of David Sherrard, a friend of mine killed on Feb 7 in this non-dangerous job. I saw his wife and one of his two daughters running in the race too. I would have rather been running WITH my friend instead of FOR him. But I wasn’t because some a-hole ambushed him and shot him in the neck. Said a-hole had just shot a friend of his and Dave and a few other officers made entry into the apartment to check for other possible victims and were immediately fired upon. Hey but feel free to talk crap about cops all you want. I’m sure if you and Nate had been on scene at that apartment watching that guy bleed out on the porch you woulda jumped right in that stack and,,,oh wait, no you wouldn’t have...

Bartender is on that list? Seriously?

Unless the local mob boss comes in and orders scotch, and you serve him a sweet fruity drink with an umbrella in it, I fail to see what could be so dangerous about being a bartender.

Sorry to hear of your friend, but no one was “making fun of cops”. The chart obviously has some funny occupations ranked above LEO which is likely in jest. If you can’t see the humor in that because you made some jump to your friend passing in the line of duty, I don’t know what to tell you. No need to get your feelings hurt because you went straight to anger instead of realizing his post was actually RECOGNIZING the danger that LEOs and Firemen deal with on a daily basis.

yeah, the lady doth protest too much on this one. Gives credence to the kind of trope about cops as a collective being short-fused and more prone to physically assault others for feeling disrespected, family especially, to the degree where they endemically gravitate to the job's legal allowance to put their hands on other people routinely in the first place. Cops need to be reminded that dissing them is not a crime, much to their chagrin. This thread seems peculiarly fitting to this theme, it seems.

Look, I've buried some friends too in the line of my duty, with anxious family members waiting back home to hear it wasn't me. Every day my wife recognizes it's a tough job and stuff goes sideways. I'm fortunate she chooses to stick with me and focus on living together, vice obsessing about what could be. So we do understand and are sympathetic to the notion of vocational risk some first responders face. So come on now, let's pop the speed brakes here and take a deep breath. We're all innocent in Shawshank. It is possible to be critical of the collective and institutional deficits we claim membership to, without taking it as a personal affront. The latter reaction merely supports the very trope being contested in the first place.

Now can we all do like Rodney and just get along? :D

The chart is not a joke, it's a summary of statistics by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. It's also not a particularly accurate representation of danger, risk, or death due to complacency or accidents compared to deaths due to malice.

Nauga,
who knows figures don't lie but liars can figure

I'm very suspicious of that list. Apparently mowing yards for a living is more dangerous than being a police officer...?? OK

The pilot one seems too high too. Are those annual figures? If there are 500,000 pilots in the US that would mean 250 pilots sustain fatal injuries yearly .. can that be true?

Insurance company stats are probably the most reliable as it’s their money on the line. The most recent one I read listed in order of risk:
1)Fisherman
2) Loggers
3) Professionl Pilots
Also, many insurance companies won’t pay on a life policy to private pilots if killed while flying a light plane. The last one I read doesn’t even cover you as a passenger if killed in a light aircraft. Private flying, at least in the eyes of the the insurance companies is a good way to end up dead. Believe me, they want to sell policies, but not at that level of risk. It’s very likely the most dangerous activity you’re involved in is not your job, but private flying according to the underwriters, even more so than riding a motorcycle.

Agreed. Lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Private pilots aren’t (or shouldn’t be) included in the chart above since it’s data related to occupations specifically, not just activities in general. I suspect there’s probably a “per captita” calculation at work as well.

Well, since you mentioned "protesting too much" I took a look, just back the previous three months...

Denver has a right to his opinions and to express them...I just don't understand the reaction to officers also expressing their opinion, and being told we are protesting too much.

Well I have worn a badge as well so I can speak from your side of the “thin blue line”. Much of what @denverpilot expresses is true. I’m sure based on how you represent yourself on this board those sentiments do not apply to you personally. Unfortunately the state of law enforcement today doesn’t give you the benefit of an average citizen knowing what they are dealing with anymore.

It also doesn’t help when you nut up on a thread that was clearly in jest. Save your defensive posture for the other times when someone is being serious.
