A new project.
It's just a simple old generic 66 172, but it sure looks great polished.
Polishing as time allows.

That’s a beauty, nice find Tom!

Looks great! How hard would that be to maintain? Does it stay polished like that for long?

Looks good! Now it's a never ending project to keep it that nice lol

A new project.
Nice. But after one of my first "so you like airplanes" learning experiences as a punk ramp rat... we turned the hangar corner to a dull, naked B-23. Haven't much cared for shiny aluminum or the smell of Met-All since then.

not bad. My 182 has been stripped to bare aluminum for a long time and I've thought about polishing. just not sure if it really fits the style.

Curious, does anyone have any good idea of how much weight paint adds to a small plane?

Yes, i do.

it depends of course on the primer and paint, as well as the number of coats applied. On a small light sport plane like mine, final weight of paint can be in the range of 20 to 30 pounds.

It was for this reason that i polished mine.

Tom
as someone who has spent over 100 hours polishing my plane, im curious what buffer and polish you are using?

it looks awesome, btw!

I use a variable speed 7" angle grinder, with a foam pad covered with a cotton buff, run at the slowest speed and mothers polish. then finish with mothers and a hand rub with a micro-fiber rag With mirror glaze to finish.
This polished finish will stay this way for about 5 years or until get gets rained on and not wiped down.

up to about 5 years before it will need a good polishing again.

cared for of course.

Holy cow that's shinny. Ridiculous about of hard work. That's why we respect the shinny one so much.
