Using BasicMed to Complete Training

Hello,

I am working on getting my private pilot license. I do have some medical conditions, so I was given a special issuance 3rd class medical by the FAA. I took a break from flight training, and the medical is now expired. So I was wondering, rather than having to get another special issuance medical, could I use BasicMed to complete my flight training? I have not yet gotten the student pilot certificate; do I need a medical to get it, or could I use my driver's license? Also, what kind of doctor would I go to for the BasicMed exam? Do they need to be familiar with the BasicMed program?

I think you can, according to the FAA faq, question 17. Of course there are smarter people here who may correct me. Please don’t take this the wrong way, but it doesn’t appear that you have read the FAA information on basic med, the answers to all your questions are right there. Good luck with your training.

WTF are you suggesting? That someone should do some basic research on their own?! The nerve!!

Good to go, according to this, even with the SI: https://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/basic_med/media/basicmed_faq.pdf
 
I just looked at 8710-1 which IIRC covers the student pilot application. And questions N1, N2 and N3 need to be answered.

Basically you will have to indicate that you have indeed received the now expired 3r d class medical, the doctor and "when it was issued".

So the way it reads it is not clear if it needs to be valid. It does not ask about SI at all. It almost reads like the OP could get his Student Pilot license right now with a expired 3rd class because he had at least been granted one in the past.

But you're gonna need a medical to solo or checkride.

I had 3rd class medical when I got my student pilot cert, that expired (actually was 2 days from getting expired) when I took the ride. told DPE I will fly under basicmed, he checked the documents to ensure I indeed have a valid medical (BasicMed) and didn't blink an eye.

if you don't have student pilot certificate, that's diff case than mine. but see post from @Ravioli and @Sinistar

If the OP doesn't already hold an unexpired student pilot certificate, he/she can apply onlin on IACRA (iacra.faa.gov). Under the medical section it specifically allows you to select BasicMed in lieu of a medical certificate.

The OP does not need a medical certificate to solo or checkride if he/she qualifies for BasicMed.
