Oshkosh - 2019

Out of how many origami contestants?
For the best in show, I think about 3 dozen entires by a dozen folders. Mrs. Steingar once won in one of the knitting categories. I looked around and blurted out that I thought her's was the only entry. That didn't go particularly well.

I want to live-stream my forum next year or at least figure out some way to put it up online for those brethren and sistren that aren't going to be able to make it. That part of computing is completely foreign to me, and in addition, anything I do has to come from 2100 miles west of Oshkosh. Anybody got the time to teach me about what the options are and a bit of guidance on how to do the one I select?

Thanks,

Jim

The biggest change will be a more organized coffee center, with more mugs, carafes, and an additional coffee maker. We are coffee-central in the North 40, under the big Texas flag, and we kept running out of coffee.
Just don't run out of munchies and BEER!

100% you want to record and post, not live stream. Then you can have a much higher quality production and it will actually work, whereas live streaming from OSH rarely has sufficient bandwidth.

I agree. Use a simple technology, not dependent upon the Internet, a camcorder with a wireless mic to your camera, record it and then post it online from the Hotel on the way home. Or even the night after.

Ever since kindergarten. Weir also rhymes with beer, queer, dear, here, year, cheer, jeer, leer, steer, and lest we forget, good old engineer. I learned a thick skin at a very early age.

Jim

Anyone who makes blinking strobe lights for our Oshkosh Texas flagpole out of Corona beer bottles and a grocery store cole slaw container can't be all bad. ;)

That is all you needed to say!
One of my yard signs when I ran the last time read like an old Burma-Shave sign:

If in this year
You vote for Weir
You'll get less bull
And a lot more steer.

Jim

(Yes, I know a steer is a castrated bull, but "steer" in the "point me in the right direction" sense is the subtle implication.)

Oh don't get me wrong brother, if I lived anywhere near Grass Valley you'd be making money off of me. My opinion of what you write about here and in other places about your views of the racket the FAA demands of avionics for certified aircraft are spot on. I enjoy your no nonsense retorts here along with the (sometimes) plain talk about how things work. Being relatively new to GA and the inner workings thereof, I like what you have to say. No offense intended.

Is it too early to start asking flight planning questions? And is asking people what they think of flying over Lake Michigan in a single engine aircraft akin to starting a low wing/high wing debate, or the merits of lean of peak operation?

The lake is a risk, just like mountains, wilderness, urban spaces, and lots of others.

"In" is an abbreviated way of saying "I'm in." for the event/activity under discussion.

Scroll to the top of the page, just above the first post and click "Watch Thread" instead of making a worthless post.

Is it turbine? Will you be above FL180?

We've been going to OSH for 15 years, always stayed in the same campground (Sleepy Hollow Farm). We go up the week before, I help Jeff get the campground ready.
We watched the owner's nieces grow up (I think they were 12 when we started), they came down to OKC to my daughter's wedding 3 years ago.
Anyway, wouldn't miss OSH for the world...........neither would my daughters.

I'm planning on flying my J3 Cub to OSH again next year (been there twice in it so far). Wondering if the NORDO approach would be worth considering or should I stick to the Fisk arrival using a handheld? Keep in mind my top level cruise speed is 75 mph.

I think they have a plan to address slow airplanes this year. May even consider using the ultralight field instead.

The NORDO approach procedure is highly discouraged. Further, it's not just a "procedure" you can opt into like the WARBIRDS/TURBINE one. You must prearrange it (and they won't tell you what the actual procedure is in advance of that arrangement). If you can get a handheld to work in your plane, I'd strongly recommend coming in the published way. Yes, you're going to have fun not being able to do 90. GO as fast as practicable.

The first time I flew in on the Fisk Approach and understandably got passed twice right at Fisk but traffic was unusually light for arrivals at the time. My handheld setup worked fine.
The second time was in 2017 for the 80th Cubs2Osh and we got a mass arrival straight in approach on 36L (and 36R if needed for spacing) Sunday early morning. That worked out wonderfully. I saw the NOTAM highly discouraged the NORDO arrival but I was curious if the slow speed would make it worthwhile. Hopefully, they'll get something figured out for us slower traffic so it works for everyone. I'd like to see them open up the grass strip west of the south end of 36L again. That would be ideal if we could squeeze an approach in there.

I'd like that as well. They never really used the grass strip idea. It was primarily for the few aircraft we get with tail skids. We marked it out a couple of years but I don't think it much got done.

Don't expect another Cub mass fly in for a while. They've had two in five years and it's problematic once you're on the ground.

Planning on arriving Tuesday the 23rd. Sounds like there is a very good chance that aircraft parking will be full at that point. Should I just plan on going to FDL? We are staying at the University.

Got my official invite to be an EAA photographer again this year, so I'm planning on being there! I'll plan on getting there on Saturday, the 20th. Looking forward to meeting more of you this year. Met up with a few of you last year and we didn't get arrested, so we'll push it a bit further this year!

I'll be there again this year. Signed up to fly in with the Cherokee mass arrival. Have a room booked in Green Bay in case the wife comes along, if not, I'm camping again. Look forward to seeing the much improved NOTAM

I s'pose I'll do a forum again this year (first one in 1974). Anybody got a suggestion about a hot subject (do-it-yourself avionics)?

Jim

I will be flying in this year with the Cherokees to Oshkosh group. Got an email today saying its the first time in their history registration has gone past 50 A/C.

I'm gonna try and make it in this year! Had to divert to FLD last year due to traffic on Sunday. After reading EAA's responses to the survey, it looks like they are trying to improve that whole arrival experience. I, too, look forward to the NOTAM....and hopefully meeting some new friends in the N40!

I think they are trying and missing the mark. The cry to "do something" has carried the day. The new arrival process <allegedly> will result in a nose to tail arrival procedure that is twice as long as the old one. It was bad enough when you were nose to tail with dissimilar aircraft for ~10 miles. Gonna be much longer now. Beyond that, they are planning on reducing service during MVFR, when they need to maintain service to get as many aircraft on the ground as they can.

All of this is in response to weather related issues beyond EAA's control. It is also the result of people not following the existing rules, so EAA/FAA are complicating things under the expectation that even more rules will make the miscreants behave better.
