Nose Gear Collapse at OSH this morning

I just happened to be watching the live feed from OSH, and saw this:

(No audio, and excuse the poor quality, it was a cellphone video of my laptop screen)

 
PIO, bummer and expensive, hold that nosewheel off boys and girls.
 
I was watching the feed when it happened as well. I was surprised it took so long to open the airport back up
 
It wasn't that big of a bounce, I'm surprised it broke like that.

Pilot did seem to be in a hurry to get all three wheels on the pavement, I wonder if he was feeling pressured to clear the active. Kind of wound up doing the opposite, I would say.

Having watched it a second time, I take back the tongue in cheek comment about it being a Navy pilot. That dude definitely flared.....and floated down the runway for an eternity. Then, after some yoke-pumping antics he dropped it in.

In fairness, the approach dumps you right next to the runway really high up. I was glad I was in an Arrow when I did it... Chop and drop.

A little slip a quarter mile earlier would have done wonders.
 
Porpoises belong in the ocean, not bouncing along the runway...sigh.

Wonder how many one way bus tickets they sell leaving OSH....
 
I only hope that if I ever make an f-up like that, I do it at a sleepy field on a quiet day where nobody saw it happened.

That looked like a stall a good 3-4’ up in the air. When it looks bad at a distance, it’s bad. I’m sure the occupants were fully aware.

That sucks for the pilot. Given the pressures put on the pilots to keep speed up, keep flying down the runway, then land on the circle (or square) and to get off the runway ASAP, I can’t help but wonder if this pressure just adds so these mistakes happen. I mean, I like a sterile cockpit on landing, but having to hear someone squawk in your ear the whole time you’re trying to put the plane on the tarmac would just peeve me off.

It does raise the stakes for precision, distraction and potential humiliation. But you do know it’s coming.

Is that a Lance or an Arrow?
Looks to stubby to be a lance, I’m thinking an Arrow.

I could be completely wrong on this, but he could’ve just overshot his ‘dot’ but was still trying to get it down anyway and it resulted in a porpoise like this?

ETA: An airplane floating on the roundout being confused for an arrow or lance? Lol what a preposterous assertion! :D

It looked like a T-Tail in the video, but good point. That said, T-tails land fast and it can be pretty easy to screw up if you're trying to plant on the orange dot.
 
Maybe an RV-12 with the canopy partially painted out?
But the hinge system for the tip up doesn't look quite right. Difficult to tell for certain in the photo link eman posted.

It’s true. That link is not a rickroll. But I’m pretty sure I saw an ad for rickrolling on the site.

I didn’t hear anything about this incident today and I’m camping about 50 yards from the runway. I always miss all the excitement.

About the pressures of the spot landing and other parts of flying into Oshkosh, I am a lowish-time pilot and had never set foot in Oshkosh in my life until I landed on the red square yesterday morning. Maybe I got desensitized by being in a three-abreast hold around Green Lake with planes merging from all directions in all four dimensions for two or three hours on and off Sunday afternoon, but the landing was really quite easy. You have to be prepared for it, but you know plenty early where you are trying to land and you just have to aim for that spot. And the consequences of landing a little early or late are much less than the consequences of pretending the appointed dot is an aircraft carrier deck. Go-arounds are free, even at Oshkosh. Do your homework, practice at home, and relax a little.
