My research shows GSS is a tacan but it doesn’t show up on the sectional. When input into skyvector it shows a tacan but places it on the rome airport. I also can’t find anything about it being decommssioned. Can anyone shed some light on this ghost tacan?

Skyvector might be running old data. I checked two different places and GSS does not show up.

When in doubt, the FAA's NASR is a great source for US NAS information. It's the source that places like AirNav pull their data from.

And no, I see nothing about a "GSS" TACAN. Which means it does not exist in the US. It has likely been decommissioned for one reason or another, or changed identifiers. Or perhaps you just have the wrong identifier in mind. The only thing close that I see is GSB, which is the Seymour-Johnson AFB TACAN. There are also two VORTACs beginning with "GS", GSH and GSO, which are active as well.

Yeah, I find it only in older airport entries. Looks like it was decommissioned.

It's not in the official records, so it does not exist:
