Vaping FO causes 737 to plunge

Hard to say, but some of those vape devices put out a huge amount of steam, which could be mistaken for smoke.

Personally, I think vaping was invented because some smoker wanted something that by comparison, would make smoking look classy.

21,000 feet in 10 minutes isn't exactly "plunging"

Isn't 2,000 fpm for an airliner not an unusual descent rate? From what I've seen on flightaware and in my experience commercial jets tend to descend around 2000-2,500 fpm.. sometimes even up towards 3,000 on steeper descents. So 2,100 fpm does not sound like plunging

All the news has been saying "dropped" from sky and "plunging"

The whole story is bazaar though and poorly worded. When I first read this on Fox news the article said that the smoking in the cockpit caused the airplane to decompress and lose pressurization.. none of it really adds up

The story and others about the incident make no sense as written. However I have a theory on what happened. After the smoke from the e-cig in the cabin was reported to the flight crew by the cabin crew, the flight crew, rather than realizing that the smoke was from the e-cig, panicked and incorrectly initiated their smoke in cabin checklist when all that needed to be done was for the idiot pilot to stop smoking.

Had a pax ‘do something’ with frankincense in the cabin today which brought tears to our eyes; almost had to don the masks.

Nothing surprises me with foreign airlines.

The story I read this afternoon said the FO wanted to turn off the cockpit fan, to sneak his vape without the Capt noticing. But instead, he turned off the cabin AC; with airflow diminished, oxygen levels fell, set off alarms and dropped the O2 masks for everyone . . . .

Wanna bet where that poor addicted soul no longer works?

It's a risky bet with unknown odds. He may be a grand son of a CCP boss or a PLA general. It's China.

At face value, that story reads like an Onion story. There is all kinds of things wrong with it. So much so that it is unclear just WHAT happened.

Another day, another plunge. This time RyanAir, which is probably as bad as Air China.

"Minerva Galvan Domenech from Spain told news website Spiegel Online that passengers, some of them bleeding from their ears, mouth or nose, had to wait 45 minutes before being allowed to leave the plane."

There is no cockpit fan. There are recirc fans but they affect the entire aircraft. It sounds like they are suggesting that he intended to turn off the recirc fan(s) in order to prevent the smoke from being recirculated back into the air supply.

There is no "oxygen level", only cabin pressure. The cabin altitude warning horn and automatic mask deployment is based on cabin pressure.

If the pilot turns of both air conditioning packs, instead of both recirc fans, the incoming airflow would have stopped and the cabin altitude would have started to climb. If this was not corrected before the cabin altitude exceeded limits then the cabin warning horn would have sounded and the passenger oxygen masks would have deployed.

The normal in-flight position for all switches would be AUTO or ON. The only exception is the APU Bleed switch which would normally be OFF.

Be careful, you’ll **** off the Air China folks comparing them to RyanAir.

Or he may be prominently displayed in the next "Bodies" exhibition.

And only heart, kidneys and liver missing from the exhibit.Wa With all the chemicals the vapenozzles put into their bodies it's only a small step to full up plastination.

I have had patients "do something" in the plane that brought tears to my eyes......unfortunately it had nothing to do with incense...
