Route planning to avoid philly approach/dep corridors

im working on an IFR flight plan for KHZL to KVAY. For me it makes sense to stay north of PHL. But the route I that is the shortest takes me down off the yardley vortac on v479 to the MENGE intersection. That puts me at a low altitude over there final approach on that side.
I’m figuring if I file this they’ll change it anyway. I also imagine getting verctored all over the place. This is a lesson on working around some class b that I will be active in after earning IFR cert.
thoughts? Was thinking of staying on airway and coming down to RUUTH and coming up v123 just so I can stay higher for a bit longer.
 
What equipment do you have? Yardley has a transition to the IAF for the GPS 08 approach. Robbinsville is the IAF for the VOR 26 approach.

How I would file this depends on equipment, weather, and expected approach.

With GPS, I would file a route to ARD direct or ARD to the expected IAF for the expected GPS approach 08 or 26. You may get vectors to intercept the FAF course.

With VOR only I would file a route to RBV direct but you should get vectors to cut the corner to the final approach course for the VOR 26.

Filing this way won't leave you without clear plans in the event of comm failure.

If it's a VFR day and you know you will maintain VFR, I'd file ARD direct. You are going to get vectors for the visual and comm failure is a matter of going VFR to safety.

On an IFR flight plan you will not have to worry about clearance into the class B as required since that will be worked out with ATC.
 
With RNAV I would just file ETX HATUP or EJUBO. You can plan a what if my radios fail route, but what ever you file will likely get amended to vectors.

Well we ended up going to 26N as it will be a popular destination for me and the fam. Do I filed a lovely flight plan taking me on the South side of philly with the intent of doubt to vor-A approach. Today’s great in flight lesson was when dealing with amended clearances. Just get handed off to allentown all fat dumb and happy until I hear,” 58x inform when ready to copy an amended clearance...” I haven’t hit my altitude or first waypoint for that matter. ( just spent 6 min on ground twisting and turning the plan into the 430!!!). In the end the only thing the same on my og plan was the destination. Misheard some waypoint letters. Bust altitude during readback. Good times. Ended up getting routed much more north over McGuire. Then with the 430 you can’t put in victor routes so you gotta pull out the map and make sure there are no turns on the route. It was a good lesson on what can happen during flight into busy airspace and how you need to be ready for anything.
The mission of getting Dots doughnuts while I was down there was great success!!

What did you file and what did you get? Getting a route around the North side seems predictable, the TEC route for Allentown to Atlantic City is FJC ARD CYN.

Thought when I talked to clearance delivery they’d amend me on the ground. No biggie was a wise lesson to learn!! While I’m not committed to foreflight, it was the only route they suggested. There was no “recently filed” routes available. buddy of mine suggested to flightplan.com for that reason. I have a feeling my CFII knew that was going to happen, let me flail away to show me how easily you can get bombarded with stuff and how to react correctly.
Now on way back they gave me the south route I asked for!

Sometimes the thing to do when you’re coming from or going to little, not used often airports is to pick busier ones close by to get a feel for what the flow of traffic is. They will have a lot more history. KABE KACY would have told you the story you needed to hear when you were looking. You’d have seen that you could expect to maybe going a long way around via DIXIE. Once you were in the air, what was the reroute you got?

Yeah that’s what happened. And that is a good call to check the bigger hubs.
While this was ifr training on beautiful day. I can see in future on nice day just going VFR over the class b taking as long as there is no TFR. Would have been faster.
 
Yes, the chart supplement has both preferred routes between larger terminals, and TEC routes listed. If you pick nearby airports you can usually figure out the preferred routing to expect. If you do you homework, sometimes you get "cleared as filed" first time. If you get slightly re-routed you can file that away as a likely route for the next time. The nice thing about filing IFR near class B is that they will have to handle you, and deviations due to WX, etc. are not a concern.

In my area, preferred routings to/from SYR or ALB will give me an idea of how things will go down. I've often been cleared as filed to PWM, PNE, GAI, or TTN from my home field using this approach.
 
Try the website fltpln.com. I find they have many more routes there and they tell you when and how often they have been issued.

Oh well, only added 20 miles to your route. I get re-routed all the time. Especially around here(I fly out of McGuire). When I get a long clearance, I usually keep tracking my current heading/course to waypoint until after I read it all back. Then plug the first waypoint in. If I have time to the first waypoint, I'll plug it in and start heading that way. Then get out the map and start working the rest of the route.
