POA Cycling Club on Strava

I noticed that. How do you like TrainerRoad? Have you tried Zwift? I used to be a big Computrainer user a number of years ago and am just getting back into Zwift. I keep all those workouts private because I think folks get a little tired of "yet another loop around Watopia". I've always dreamed about taking the bike somewhere more than I've actually done it was well.

Full Disclosure: I currently work for TrainerRoad, but I'm a developer, not in marketing, so what follows are just my personal opinions.
I find training indoors to be a more efficient use of my time, but would much rather ride outside over the summer. But what usually happens is my fitness drops as I don't stay as focused when I'm riding outside. So this summer I'm going to try to keep a couple of sessions a week indoors. If you've never done a structured training program for cycling, something like TR can help, and we're getting into the Analysis side of things now as well, but I'll stop there. If anyone has specific questions about TR I would be happy to answer them via DM.

As for Zwift, I signed up for the beta before I started working at TR but never tried it out. I've never personally seen the appeal, but if it gets someone exercising when they otherwise would not, great. I prefer to watch tv, movies, or read a book while on the trainer. You could do those while Zwifting I guess, and I know there are people who use Zwift and TR at the same time. So lots of options out there to make indoor training more tolerable for you.

I'm a bit of a data junkie so I record all my fitness activities via a Garmin device (usually a Fenix 5x) which get upload to Garmin Connect and then sent to Strava, Cycling Analytics, Training Peaks, and SportTracks. I wish I had a power meter for my ice skates for when I play hockey, but have to settle for Heart Rate and SM02. It's pretty interesting to compare a game of hockey with a indoor ride I do and how well they match up (hockey shifts vs. vs short higher intensity intervals on the bike).

We've had eleven sign up for the POA Cycling Club on Strava. This week six of the eleven made rides for 237 total club miles. I have to go to Baltimore for four days this coming week, unfortunately I won't be able to make my usual rides. Hopefully you guys will be able to pick up my slack.

We have 12 members now with 8 making rides last week for a total of 297 miles. I was out of town last week and only able to make one ride. Hopefully I will be able to contribute more this week.

This is cool to see. I would sign up but I mostly use my bike now for transportation from the airports I fly into to wherever I'm going. I've largely given up on real cyclotouring since moving to VT because the highways here are just too unsafe for cycling - too narrow, too many curves, too many drivers who are so afraid to drive they really shouldn't be on these roads. There have been way too many cyclists killed by motorists in VT in the past decade; I don't plan to be one of them.

Maybe I should set up a Strava site for POA hikers. Not sure how accurate it would be for distance along winding trails, but would be interesting to try. Anyone game?

Can I join and use my stats from indoor rides? (is that cheating?)

I really think Strava offers the superior product. One of the differences is in recording cumulative climb. GPS distances are fairly accurate in the direction of travel, since many of the positional errors are self-cancelling, but when tracking cumulative elevation, it's very inaccurate since the positional inaccuracies are all additive. If your device does not have an altimeter to track elevation, then Strava will replace the data set with map data, which gives a more accurate picture of what you've climbed.

I used to use Runkeeper. I switched to Strava a few years back. I used Tapiriik to import all the Runkeeper data to Strava (it syncs data between most fitness apps.)
You need to live in a snow area to really understand Zwift. I'm going to do it this winter as my plan last winter didn't work.

I’ve become a gym rat,as I age,do most riding now on fixed bike or walking treadmill. Something to be said for no traffic and temp. Control.

Over on the Purple Board there is a small group of bikers on Strava, and yes some of the riders back East do Zwift in the winter time.

True, but I love being in the open air, and very rarely can I stand 3 hours on a bike indoors. But indoor biking has a place and I think Zwift might make it easier having a pain cave in the house.

No traffic on a mountain bike trail. Temp control by adjusting ride time for most ideal time of day. Unfortunately that might be the middle of the night in some places. And no help in snow country.

I usually plan my rides so that there is a burger stop halfway or near the end (within ten miles if I can help it) to keep it reward based. Think Pavlov training a dog to ride a bike.

Yes, you can join. Even with the in door trainers you are still churning and burning. I do wish there was a separate category on Strava to tally the real rides versus the Zwift rides, but where the individual rider can merge them into his stats as they desire.

This is a brilliant approach.

Kinda like the vodka soda with lime I put in my second cage bottle? Time is right and the buzz is fantastic. A little too early is simply terrible though.

Okay now that sounds like a great idea. I might try that on an afternoon ride.

We are up to 14 members in the POA Cycling Club now. We had 10 of the 14 making rides last week for a total of 456 miles. That's up more than 50% from last week! That is pretty awesome. Unfortunately I'm out of town on business this week and next week, so no riding for me until I get back home.

We still have 14 members in the POA Cycling Club. We had 9 of the 14 making rides last week for a total of 344 miles. That's down a bit from last week. I'm still out of town on business and was not really expecting to be able to ride until I return home this coming Saturday. Fortunately I was able to borrow a mountain bike from a coworker and ride this past Saturday and Sunday.

I have this friend that might sign up. On the caveat he's a friend, okay.

First bike ride in a while today, about 24 miles, why oh why do I let myself get out of shape....

Laid out this week due to extreme heat. Hoping for a break in the weather shortly.

That's why I like to ride at least five days a week. When I go out of town on business, like right now, I over eat and under exercise and the first couple of days on the bike after I return home are rough.

That's my goal 4 or 5 days a week, but I have an 8 day vacation planned in the beginning of July that will screw with that plan. I hope for a strong finish to the summer.

I’m on it now. Just need to figure out what a km is...

Speaking of cycling, my wife happened upon a “cycler” laying face down in the middle of the road this week. She was on her way to work and thought he was pool toy initially. He was a victim of a hit and run. She’s a nurse. Stabilized him and was able to keep him immobile, once he awoke, for half an hour waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Last update she got was broken leg and back and the driver (young boy) had turned himself in.

You have to be a real turd to leave someone lying in the street.

Definitely not arguing against the turd part, but I think it was just a scared kid. He made a BIG mistake, now he gets to look forward to the consequences.

I'm thinking his parents made him go in when they saw the damage and he fessed up. My kid would never drive my car again, not for the accident, but for leaving the guy there.

Yes, I don't see how you can just drive off leaving someone in the road like that. Scared young kid or not, don't people have a conscience any more? Sad really. Praying that the cyclist is able to make a full recovery.

I haven’t looked at this app yet; however, does it also record popular rides/routes? I used to use an app called mapmyrun that would record your routes so you could share with an online community.

I just made this thread about fitting my mtb in my plane: https://www.pilotsofamerica.com/community/threads/bike-in-a-plane.111802/

I think it would be cool if riders could share interesting routes (be it the route or sites/food/etc along the route) near airports in their area for people that may wish to fly in to their area.

I'm guessing the kid who the guy on the bike, being a teenager might have panicked initially and then did the right thing after he had time to think about it. Things like that are known to happen, teenagers sometimes try to cover up pretty terrible things out of fear of what their parents or the police might do to them out of habit when they are afraid. Let your kids know you'll forgive small stuff... only cure I think of.

Or he might have been a douchebag who didn't care. I don't know the kid. I like to assume most people are basically decent until proven otherwise.

Strava does all of the things you asked about. I'm personally not too crazy about the Strava record screen. It only shows ride time, distance and average speed. There is no option for configuring this screen. Everything else is pretty neat about Strava. The Cyclemeter app has a great record screen that you can configure. It also has 5 data screens that you can toggle through in addition to a dedicated map screen. If you don't care for the Strava record screen, you can record with Cyclemeter and upload to Strava. The Strava website has a lot of functionality for creating and saving routes along with segments within the route.

One of the fundamental things you learn when you learn to drive is to stop if you have an accident. If a 16 year old kid is not mature enough to do that then we need to raise the driving age. I don't think that is necessary most kids would stop, we need to teach our kids that respect for life trumps all other problems, leaving a guy lying face down in the street unconscious after you just hit him is just about as heinous a thing to do as I can imagine. Should this kid be locked up? No, but he shouldn't drive again for quite a while. Scared or not he screwed up big time.

I use a Garmin Edge 1000 that automatically uploads to Strava. The edge will show pretty much anything you want while riding and will run for 13 hours if you want to do really long rides.

.

Strava does a cool heatmap that where people ride. I believe a few towns have used it to justify putting in bike paths in highly trafficked areas. https://www.strava.com/heatmap#7.00/-120.90000/38.36000/hot/all

I’ve never used MapMyRide, but here’s a comparison I found: https://www.sportivecyclist.com/mapmyride-vs-strava-a-detailed-comparison/
