The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
What does the PoA crowd and MC think about adding a new forum to house discussions about weather?

Something for
  • education (Where can I go to learn more about weather and aviation?),
  • weather products discussion (mobile device apps, aviationweather.gov, NOAA website, etc),
  • discussions on "this happened, what can I learn from it"
  • interesting weather imagery (photos, videos, etc)
  • and more...

Yes, I think it would be useful.

I've been wondering for a long time why none of the three or four big aviation forums (AOPA, POA, Purple Board and even Vans RV) do not have a weather forum. I suggested it on AOPA a few years ago but it went nowhere.

I have been flying a lot of VFR cross country over the past two years (though I'm IFR rated) and I've learned that there are many aspects of aviation weather that never get discussed, or lessons learned passed on.

While some people think learning a lot about weather is more applicable to IFR pilots, I've learned it's equally important for VFR pilots.

Weather is a huge issue with a myriad of aspects that are related to local conditions. I honestly think the aviation forum world NEEDS a weather forum.

I also that it can increase the readership if POA does it first and establishes a history of informative posts.

Seriously, we NEED a weather forum!

I say go for it.

It would be very useful for low time pilots like me.

[bump]

I'm curious as to what members of the MC have to say....

7/8 threads will be “should I fly today?”

Great idea. I am surprised why this hasn't happened already.

Not being paid by any aviation content or service provider.

If I had asked for a forum to talk about how approaches, arrivals, and other parts of the IFR system are created, are you going to accuse me of being paid by RussR and Aterpster?

I am a strong supporter of @bbchien ... where is the accusation that he pays me to help other airmen get guidance to solve medical certification problems? He doesn't, ya know.

And why is it any of this any business of yours? And why are you trying so hard to kill a friendship?

Mike, it just ties in with the whole Foreflight thing since ScottD is a Foreflight employee.

As others have mentioned, weather can be discussed in any of the numerous appropriate forums that already exist.

And (all the following is just opinion):

I have a long history on the internet with Scott and my opinion is:

There are professional members on various pilots boards who give up themselves freely (like Charley Melot, the ADA boys, etc.). Scott is not one of them. Anytime there's a weather question Scott will give an answer similar to "well, there are thunderstorms, and then there's big thunderstorms. And if you want to learn more than that please sign up for my upcoming seminar for $400!"

But what really ****es me off about Scott is that he will set up a seminar and people will sign up for it. But if there's not enough people signed up to make it worth his while then he will cancel the seminar at the last minute. That policy is indeed included in the fine print on his website, but on at least one occasion, one or two people lost their non-refundable airline ticket because Scott canceled at the last minute. This was way back in the CPA days. It caused a pretty good ruckus.

Sorry, he's not here (or anywhere else) for the betterment of the community...he participates only for the betterment of himself. And if I suspect anyone of posting here in an attempt to help him, I will definitely go ballistic because I have no use for people who are trying to take advantage of my friends.

Check out his posts here, he's the Mike Busch of weather.

I can understand and respect a subject matter expert who want to get paid for their expertise. Same for those who choose to share.

I'm glad to hear a weather form is on the way.
