Hi.
I'm planning to buy a plane for flight instruction & I have 2 questions.

1.For part 61 flight training as individual CFI can I fly past TBO ?

2.If the engine is well within TBO, but the overhaul was done 20 years ago. Is there a limitation calendar wise for the TBO ?

Thanks kindly

Bad question on the poll.

Yes, there is a calendar TBO on all engines (that I'm aware of), regardless of whether it's instruction or not. It's usually 12 years.

No, you do not have to follow the TBO for flight instruction - Either calendar or hours.

For Part 61, overhaul at TBO is reccomended, but not required. Part 141 overhaul at TBO is mandatory and both require a 100 hour inspection. The calendar limits are also a recommendation.

Where would one find this 141 requirement?

I do not believe overhaul at TBO is mandatory even for a 141 school.

Part 141 overhaul at TBO is mandatory
141 aircraft fall under Part 91 rules. No TBO requirement, only 100 inspect required. If 141 school also had a 135 certificate and used the same aircraft then TBO limit is enforced but under Part 135.

I was testing you. :)

I guess I got mixed up on the 141’s maintenance plan that has to be submitted for their aircraft and how it’s supposed to specifically outline their procedures for that school's aircraft. That must only be a requirement if they choose to follow the published TBO times.

Curious. Is this something new for a 141 school? Reference? It's been years since I dealt with 141 but there was no requirement to "submit" anything from a maintenance standpoint. The only requirement was to maintain aircraft per Part 91 "For Hire" rules. And the only time the FSDO looked at the mx records was during normal surveillance inspection. Even if mx was contracted out there was no requirements to submit any info.

What is your ins. co. going to want?

They don't care. Insurance companies aren't in the business of telling folks how to maintain their airplanes (that comes with its own risk). All your insurance policy will say is "airworthy." If the FAA says it's legal, the insurance company doesn't care.

Don't forget that some things - like props - have their own TBO requirements. Some have ADs, and at least one had the TC modified to make TBO by time mandatory.

FYI: only if the TC has an approved Airworthiness Limitations section will there be mandated TBOs or life limits. There are a number of references to this.

That's generally where it will be. Hartzell had a limitation added requiring compliance with their service bulletin that specified TBO limits. IIRC, this was around/after the time there was an AD on some of their 2 blade props.

Some insurance companies are indeed asking about time since last overhaul, both calendar and hours. I do not know if it is being factored into your annual premiums but they want the data.

I looked the other night and see no requirements beyond part 91 regulations unless it is buried somewhere that I didn’t see in my quick search. There are equipment requirements however.

I’m guessing part 141

It factors into value and how much they'll insure the airplane for.

I had a past (calendar) TBO fail on me. Insurance didn't ask. All they wanted to see was an annual in the past year.
