Because of the "First Ride of the Spring" thread, I decided to create a club on Strava for those of us that are also into cycling. I thought it would be a great way for us to stay in touch with our rides and hopefully ecourage each other to move forward with our riding. For those unfamiliar with Strava, it is a free app for your cell phone to record your rides and then save them to the Strava site. You can review your stats on Strava to see how you are progressing. The main Strava site for your regular computer also has some other neat features for mapping out future rides and etc. I hope we can get enough people to participate to make it fun. After you have a Strava account, just click the link below to join.

I’m in, but I’m just a fat bastard trying to get to be a medium large bastard.

There are a lot of transformation stories from cycling on YouTube. I cycle to improve my health. Tread mills bore me, but I love cycling. I hope the POA cycling club will be an encouragement for all of us to cycle on a regular basis and encourage each other. I'm glad to see everyone participating!

I’m down about 50 in the last year. Weight lifting and swimming mainly. My wife is one of those crazy Ironman people and has talked me into doing a few Tri’s this summer.

While we are on a diversion from flying, I'll try to tie this into flying...on two wheels. This is one of my favorite cycling videos on YouTube. It is Stelvio Pass in Northern Italy. The downhill run looks like a total adrenalin rush. The uphill climb looks like pure torture. I have so much respect for guys that can make those climbs.

If you want a chuckle, check out the Penny Farthing racing.

Ok. We'll make it a metric century. ;)
Now that I might be able to do if it is on a 'rail trail' that doesn't have rough hills to climb. There is a rail trail that runs from Atlanta to Alabama called the the Silver Comet Trail. If I remember right it is around 60 miles or 100 kilometers. I would like to ride it sometime. I know that trail continues on into Alabama but I don't remember what the name is for that section. I think the whole trail (Alabama and Georgia) is around 100 miles.

Sometime in the fall, perhaps?

i'm in for that. Don't want to dual-log and I've been a MapMyRide guy for too long to switch now. POA century sounds cool

Yes, I know what you mean. I was using Runtastic before Strava. All my friends in town were using Strava, so for me to interact with them I started using Strava. I really prefer the Runtastic record screen over Strava. Strava only shows Time, Avg Speed and Distance and there is no way to configure it for anything else. A bit lame in my opinion. Runtastic has a wide array of parameters you can configure and display. If I'm just riding laps at home, I use Strava only. If I am riding out, I will start Strava then load Runtastic so I will have the better record screen with map to use. So far my phone seems to handle running both apps at the same time with no problem after I turned off the voice prompts in Runtastic.

A sprint distance tri is not bad, though how you can call something that takes more than an hour a sprint escapes me. I did two Olympic distance tris and hit the wall big time at the two and a half hour mark.

I’ve done a few sprints in the past, and will stick there for now. It’s bad enough that they call you a Clydesdale...

Wife’s best in the full Ironman is 12:32. Just crazy to go that long.

Yeah, my boss did one a couple of years ago, his wife was about ready to throw him out, he spent so much time training. My wife trained for a marathon, I used to get her a 20 pound bag of ice and a quart of chocolate milk on Saturdays after her long training runs. Me, if I can't get it done in 2:30, I'm not doing it.

I really think Strava offers the superior product. One of the differences is in recording cumulative climb. GPS distances are fairly accurate in the direction of travel, since many of the positional errors are self-cancelling, but when tracking cumulative elevation, it's very inaccurate since the positional inaccuracies are all additive. If your device does not have an altimeter to track elevation, then Strava will replace the data set with map data, which gives a more accurate picture of what you've climbed.

I used to use Runkeeper. I switched to Strava a few years back. I used Tapiriik to import all the Runkeeper data to Strava (it syncs data between most fitness apps.)

Do y'all allow runners in your club?

If they don't we can start our own.

I do both. I actually much prefer cycling but running's more convenient and there are lots of events to enter. I'm kind of slow and tend to get dropped on group rides.

Joined. Although my riding this year has dropped to near zero.

LOL... I joined but my activities (runs) don't show up. I used to do some mountain biking but mechanical issues tick me off. Running's so much simpler and, as you said, convenient.

I've got a long way to go to be able to do a Century ride. Maybe eventually.

i like to do or two hour rides. A century would be better done in some little ole low and slow airplane, or ultralight, trike, or gyrocopter.

I think there is a button to click to select between cycling, running and swimming. Check to see if you are in the running mode on the Strava website. I'm not sure how to toggle it on the phone app.

PS: I found the selections under the PROFILE view on the phone app.

If there's interest, but we can't agree on a meet up location for a conventional ride, perhaps we could select a day and each cyclist could post his century results to the Strava PoA club.

These boys have mad skillz...

That was incredible!!! While I was watching that I was wondering how many times those guys have busted their tails learning how to do those tricks. It was neat at the end when they showed the out takes of their crashes. Thanks for posting that.

Well, Maryn Ashton busted his ass in a trick that paralyzed him. He came back though. I'll post the video later.

  1. I ride a lot indoors, and my training software sends "mile" thru to Strava, so I apologize for that, not trying to cheat on the leader-boards ;)
  2. I would be interested in a remote century ride (where we all try to do 100 miles on a given day)
  3. Just getting back into flying after about 3 years. I only took my bike once when I flew between '10-'15, but always thought that taking the bike someplace would be a good reason to go flying. So I'd be up for meeting up somewhere. Spending most of July getting checked out in a new plane, IPC, etc, so August would be better for me, and would allow everyone time to get trained up.
  4. Probably going to be in the Greenville, SC area this October on a biking vacation (Trek Travel) (flying commercial with my wife). There is a off day in the middle of the week, and a couple of the nights there is nothing organized, so some opportunity to meet-up.

Anyway, this is some pretty cool stuff. Martyn Ashton, the main guy in the previous video, is paralyzed from the waist down. Yet, check out what he does on a mountain bike...

What an inspiring video to come back and ride like that while being paralyzed. It would be a bit unnerving being strapped in with your feet taped to the pedals. He really has to have a lot of trust in his friends to catch him at the end of the ride to keep from falling.

I noticed that. How do you like TrainerRoad? Have you tried Zwift? I used to be a big Computrainer user a number of years ago and am just getting back into Zwift. I keep all those workouts private because I think folks get a little tired of "yet another loop around Watopia". I've always dreamed about taking the bike somewhere more than I've actually done it was well.

To me Strava is a tool. Just like any other tool, it's as useful as you want it to be. I actually don't do Strava just to gloat to others on the Internet. I like reviewing my routes, and planning for new ones. I like to see what works, and what doesn't. I don't mind sharing of course. I sometimes do spin classes - hour long sessions (sometimes I teach them) but adding them to Strava is of no value to me.

The whole Zwift thing I don't understand. I mean I know riders - riders that are much more conditioned that me, use it. I would think an hour session of peddling in one place watching men's asses in the Tour De France or Zootopia or whatever would get old, but, then again, I live in a place where I can ride year round.

I've never tried Zwift and know nothing about it beyond a couple of YouTube videos I've seen. I don't have a problem with being able to upload your Zwift rides to Strava but it would seem to make more sense if the Zwift rides were contained in their own separate category from the actual rides.

For those that do Zwift, how do you turn on curves. The videos I've seen show a device to replace the rear wheel to transmit your power/speed to Zwift or a resistance device you drive with your rear wheel, but I don't see how you turn.
