What happened?

You mean why anyone would leave California for Minnesota? Heck if I know.
 
Weather in Chicago has been terrible lately - we've had lots of diverts (35 between mainline and our regional carriers) because of the storms. My guess is they held for awhile, got low on gas, and took it to MSP.

Looks like he held at VIVID from 7:20PM until 7:58PM EDT and then diverted.
 
Scroll the map over. See the red around ORD, that's what happened. I heard there were quite a few diversions from ORD from the weather the last couple of days.

Damn, most folks made the same deduction that I did. The hold pattern, the weather radar, and the fact that it is normally a SFO-ORD flight all point to a diversion.
