Anyone know about Wings of Hope?

I received a mailer today from Wings of Hope, based out of St. Louis, MO.

The research I performed via the web causes me to believe they are a worthwhile organization. However, I have never heard of them prior to this mailer.

Does anyone have any experience with them? If so, what is your opinion. I like to know as much about an organization as possible prior to making a donation.

Check out http://www.charitynavigator.org/ . They give them 4 stars, which is their highest rating. Ratings are not based on the value of the charity in subjective matters, but are based on measureable criteria like how much of donated dollar actually goes to programs vs. fund raising and other expenses. Just learned about this web site a few weeks ago.

"Founded in 1962, Wings of Hope is a non-sectarian, non-racial, non-political international organization that specializes in implementing poverty reduction strategies for a defined region. This is accomplished by establishing a base of operations and partnering with the poor being served. The services at each base are customized depending on the needs of the region. The common denominator is always health care and a transportation system, typically a small bush airplane. The tears of a mother in the remote jungle are the same as a mother's tears in the asphalt jungle of an American city. They need a way to access whatever health care is available and the guidance to advance those capabilities. Our goal is to change the course of humanity towards peace and hope."
 
It seems like I saw something on their operation recently on Discovery or it was something very close to how they operate.

I just took a peek at the web site. I'm sure it was them as the operation presented on Discovery was also based in St. Louis. Keep your eyes open and it may air again. It has been on at least twice that I've noticed.

That's very cool... my kind of charity organization. I wish I was qualified to fly for them (especially the have-two-years -to-spare-without-pay part, LOL).

Thanks. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a rerun of the program.
 
I saw that show as well. If I remember correctly (I could be wrong, usually am :redface: ), the organization rebuilds the aircraft then ships it over, sets up a base of operations with pilots and support, then transfers the responsibility over to the locals.
