Story here.

Sad. I can't believe that the pet's owner agreed to putting the dog there though the FA shouldn't have demanded it either. Horrible.

That’s horrible but I’m wondering what killed it. I didn’t think those bins were airtight.

Panic induced heart attack?

They were both morons. Dog's owner bringing the dog on in something that is more handbag than kennel. And Flight Attendant for insisting on shoving the dog up in the overhead compartment.

When the hamster thing happened the onion had a piece about United forcing someone to flush a German Shepherd in the lav. The onion is frequently prophetic.

Passenger airplanes are designed to carry human passengers.

Not designed to carry dogs.

Perhaps people should stop forcing airlines to do things with their airplanes that the airplanes were not designed to do.

I doubt the overhead bin had anything to do with the death, unless it stressed the animal out somehow. I don’t like the story at all, but I also think the narrative is overblown.

Airline charged passenger $200 for transport of dog. Methinks the airline should have "accommodated" the dog. In other words, the pax didn't force the airline to do a single thing. The pax paid for transportation of the dog.

That.

Though what kind of person agrees to do that to their dog, you can tell much about a person by how they treat their pup.

Shoulda told the stew that you were not going to do that, that your dog could stay safely by your feet, otherwise deplane.

Don't read about these things occurring on Virgin or Alaska flights.

I wonder if the post 9/11 mentality of security and compliance makes people feel like they have to obey FAs in these situations even if what they're being asked to do is terrible.

And what is it about an overhead bin you feel caused the death?
Granted I wouldn’t do that with my pet, but I still don’t see the cause of the death.

Yet they fail miserably at that too. Airlines never heard of extremities. Atlantic Slave ships had better layouts. Hey look y'all, new United Economy Plus seating charts on the super POS Guppy came out on seatguru....o_O:D

Panic, not enough doggie prozac.

The bins are definitely not air-tight enough for oxygen depletion or CO2 accumulation from a little dog to be an issue.

Right... which leads me to believe it was not caused by the overhead bin.

You can stress a critter to death, that pup has no idea what a airplane is, no idea about any of it, just got locked in a pitch black loud dark space, alone, pressure changes, slight g loading the dog never felt before, bumps, stuff shifting and bumping his carrier, it isn't super surprising to me, also keep in mind this wasn't likely a normal shipping sized crate, but a small tight carrier.

Owner was stupid at best, FA well, special place in hell for people like that. I'd love for her to get abducted on the middle of the night, tossed into a casket, put in the back of a plane and do acro, I'd wager it would end up best case, with her crapping, peeing and barfing all over herself and ending up with some psychological issues, worse case having a MI or heat stroke and kicking it.

and yet the pooch is dead. assuming panic precipitated death were it not for the bin Fido would likely still be alive. might be heat exhaustion, might be lots of things. owner should get necropsy and go from there.

Crushed by the ginormous oversized bag that someone else shoved into the bin next to the dog...
...when the pilot landed sideways.

FTFY

Had a landing in Houston once where everyone's bags were shifted forward about three feet. The cockpit door was not open during deplaning...

That too

I mean the average bag up there weights probably 3-4 time what the pup probably weighed, imagine being restrained in a big sleeping bag, one end against a wall and having a 600lb crate come smashing in on your neck.

It puts the lotion in the basket.

It puts the shoes in the X-ray.

It puts the pup in the overhead.

Don’t see how that is so different than a pet owner crating an animal then throwing a blanket over it. Again, I wouldn’t do it, but I don’t see the hubbub.
I have more of an issue with pet owners who unleash their pets to let them run in the streets.

I agree with James... but would add that likely the idiot owner probably zipped up the bag and the poor dog suffocated from panic, stress, and lack of oxygen in a closed handbag. If not crushed to death by the aforementioned ginormous "not really a carry on" bag that it was stuck next to.

Yeah... we don’t know. But yet it’s still permissible to put Fido down in the cargo bin.

Yeah... we don’t know. But yet it’s still permissible to put Fido down in the cargo bin.

There are some rather large differences.

Gotta get a vet checkup first

Proper sized HARD crate, which is designed for this

Secured by people who at least have a little training, not Tod and Tammy cramming their yuuuge bag into a bin

Etc

Properly having a crated dog on a plane is no where near the same ball game as putting a little dog in a carrier or purse into a overhead bin with loose bags.

United is taking full responsibility and says the dog should not have been placed in the overhead. The FA should be terminated if she knew there was a dog in there.

Yeah... we don’t know. But yet it’s still permissible to put Fido down in the cargo bin.

It's actually permissible to fly with fido in the cabin. Fido has to be small enough to stand up in a pet carrier that fits underneath the seat.

Just don't take your pets on commercial flights. Drive, board them at home, fly them yourself.... just don't leave them at the mercy of some air crew or baggage handler that won't care what happens to them. I mean really commercial is barely fit for humans these days but at least we understand what's going on think about how it is for a dog.

I’d ask if the crew called catering nice and quick so as not to let the meat go to waste...

... but we all know domestic carriers don’t serve real meals anymore.

So that old joke is dead. Bummer. :)

They still serve the pilots...
