Piper Sport down at Addison (Dallas)

The plane is registered to Michael Jackson........ in Cocoa, FL.

Could it have been the impossible turn, after a mechanical problem? Hoping both survive and have a full recovery.

Looks like one of the Sport Cruisers operated by US Sport Aircraft, which is both a dealer for that particular aircraft, and a very active flight school that uses that aircraft.

I hope all is well for the occupants.

And a Bless Your Heart to the media... "...crashed on one of the runways..." At last count, KADS only has a single runway.

But two ends right? I'm sure that's what they meant Mike. ;):D

@mscard88 ... when we finally meet in person, remind me to demonstrate how us male Aggies count to 21

The only plane that I straight up had zero desire to fly, local place had one for cheap, talked to my student, he said he might want to swap over from the 172N, I needed a checkout myself, after logging less than 1 hour on it, I told the student to forget it, controls were very disproportionate and it just felt cheap.

Question to those who teach at flight schools....

How does the liability insurance coverage work for an incident similar to this?

Does the school's coverage indemnify the instructor?

Depends on the instructors net worth, if you're a low time greenhorn, eating ramen and driving a 88' Honda, yeah you're probably fine.

Nice looking airplane. Piper tried flogging them for a short time. But this is far from the first time I've seen a less than complimentary report about how they fly.

Depends if he’s a freelance or not. If he’s working for a flight school, than he’s umbrella’d under their insurance (or should be). If he’s freelance and he didn’t carry a policy on himself, than he could be in deep kimchi if the student decides to come back at him.

Not many ditching options around there...glad to see they atleast made it back to the field, instead of into one of the many buildings around there... hope for a speedy recovery

They were actually built by an outfit called Czech Aircraft works. For about a year Piper rebranded them to get into the LSA market, then something soured, don't know what. Only ever saw one, looked like a toy to me.

I saw one at a fly in and I said aloud "that thing looks fast" that comment made a group near by start laughing.

I guess they are not all that quick.

They can't be by Light Sport requirements. 120 kts max speed.

I own and fly one. I really do like it, the controls do like pitch though. It is a great plane for its purpose. Training.. slow and docile. But it is light (gets tossed) and slow. Really do have to have some patience on XC. It is also pretty capable as well - not that its certified but with dynon and a 796 it was more capable than the plane i rented for the ifr checkride.

cheap to own and fly too. Only doing 115 true at almost any alt, but 5.2 gph to do it. I plan for 108 @ 6 and have flown Mem out to Wichita,KS, Beaumont,TX, Florence,SC.

Headwinds hurt, that big fat wing will catch every bit of what is coming at you. Sometimes it's cool to watch semis pass you on I-40 down below..... NOT.

When flying my little 150 I had that happen a lot. I didn't mind all that much, the 150 did cost much to acquire or feed. The CZAW Sort Cruiser, on the other hand, is not inexpensive to acquire. Not at all.

When you start crunching numbers, if you're not in a hurry, the best way to fly is slow! My 140 is a 100 mph plane. I've been looking at 170s, which are 120-125 mph planes. For 20-25 mph, my fuel burn would almost double. In my case, it makes sense to get the 170 for more seats, making a good photo plane, etc, but the cost of fuel makes some trips a lot more money.

Flying slow is cheaper, but I wouldn't say better unless you aren't in a hurry. Then again, if you really aren't in a hurry cars are cheaper still.

Yep, depends on your mission. Most of my flying is for fun, so being in the air a little longer is fine with me.

I just got back from driving to see my Dad. My truck used more fuel than my plane would have, and the plane would have made cut the 8 hour drive to 4.5 hours. The cost of AV Gas is much higher though, so it would have cost more. Still, if I didn't need my truck when I was up there, I would have enjoyed the flight!

Wow, I just can't figure out what their strategy was there?!?!?

Serious injuries, indeed. I can't imagine escaping serious lower back injuries after hitting that hard.

I can’t either. For those who fly out of ADS what were they looking at straight ahead for terrain and landable spots that they turned back in that low?

That altitude they passed the camera at, nearly screamed “land straight ahead with a power loss”, to me.

Also kinda looks like they induced a stall before they came into the frame, instead of just accepting the across the runway into the grass landing if they were out of airspeed and options. Have to keep it flying, not lined up with the runway, oh well... as I recall from some other ADS videos there’s quite a bit of open space from left out of the frame heading off to the right across the taxiway and into the grass before the fence.

That looks completely out of control before they entered the frame.

Really no place to put down south of the airport.
