I know its been a while since I posted and certainly have missed much. I was curious to learn who is actually building what?

John Recine Pietenpol Aircamper NX895 BP (reserved)

I reserved the number for 2 basic reasons, first I wanted that tail number as it clearly reflects the aircraft. More importantly it give the project an identity as my airplane ratehr than that pile of sticks or just my project. For me thats an important aspect in that I can call it my airplane. Thats a real motivator for me to keep working!

I thought it would be good if we could share build information, techniques and discuss build challenges. I belong to the Pietenpol board, there a lot of info shared there, this would make one more forum to discuss all builds and all materials if youre interested.

Just a though!

Keep on gluing!

How's your build going, John? As you may, or may not know, I am no longer building the KR2S, and am now awaiting delivery of the tail kit for an RV7A.

Nick,

I heard about the KR2S and how it all came a part on ya, man I was sure sorry to hear about that one. I am glad to hear you are back on the build, I think thats great!

The piet has taken a back seat to the chores of summer, yard etc,etc...... The good new is that even though I am invloved in closing down my consulting practice to a part time evdevour and cleaning upo the files and such, that project will only last a short tim then its back to "gluin and doin"

I got a stash of aluminium I plan to use for some of it and have been making slow progress in rounding build materials. The good news is I should have enough accumulated supplies to keep me building through the winter. I hope to be making some definate plans on the power plant. I still have that Pinto engine as a fall back if nothing else. I just need top do some redesign of the internal components to get all the hourse power out at or below 3000 rpm, otherwise its a redrive and extra parts. I hope to avoid that if at all possible.

I am considering a longer stroke on that ford engine and a new cam profime to flatten out the hp, rpm and torque curve to get it where I need it. Still researching that part of the powerplant. Looking for new rods and crank for it to get that longer stroke. I am open to suggestions....

Soon to be back to sticking sticks tgether and watching her become my airplane.

Thanks for asking.

John

I built a Rans S12XL and the tail and wings for an RV6. Also the tail for an F1 Rocket. Apparently my attention span for building airplanes is about 4 months.

There are builders and there are pilots, and a very few lucky souls who are both. I'm not.

Here's the Rans in flight.

I've contemplated building a RV in my living room. Knowing myself though and my lack of attention span I think--that I'm probably better off buying a completed airplane.

I cut my wing ribs today. Light Miniature Aircraft LM-J3-W full size J-3 replica.

Dad and I built and are flying a RV-7A.

Our current project is a RV-10. Tail section is done. QB wings and fuselage should arrive before Christmas.

I'm building a Mosquito XE3 helicopter. Shooting for a mid March first flight date.

John if you are still looking for an 0-200 shoot me an email.

My Boss just took delivery of a Rans S7 Kit. I will be working on it every Tuesday from now untill test flight. Does that count? or do I not get credit because it's not my plane. I told him I'd help build it, but only for some flying time in it!

Missa,

If youre building then youre building, if youre watching then you not! you just got to be building is all.

Well, I plan on getting my hands dirty... I even took the fabric covering seminar at Osh in prepration for him buying this kit. :D

Bookmarked your blog... I was building an RV-7, sold it, and the Bearhawk is on my short list for a future project.
Lemme know if you have any questions. I can fill in between the lines from what the factory tells you.:)

Its nice to know there are so many builders out there woking on really neat projects. All sharing the same or similar sets of goals.

When ever anyone when themine will be done the get the same answer every time, 2 years it will be done! Now thats always a rolling 2 years and always from the date I get asked.

2 years seems to me a reaslistic goal and I'll continue striving towards it no matter what obviously thats barring I dont die in the mean time.

Well been on vacation since December 15, so that means much building the Piet this month. The most since last May I believe. I been working on the seats. Seems line once you get to building on them you begin to think of more features that can be added so it always takes a bit longer to build in the new designs and modifications.

I hope to be posting some pictures soon as I get them fitted in.

John

A new wrinkle has emerged, last spring for the first in my life I started to battle alergies, lasted till october. I got back into the shop December the 17th to get back to building and I got alergies again. Now I seem to be alergic to the wood, wood dust or the shop, not sure what it is, but a new wrinkle I'll have to iron out. Its hard to cut wood when you cant see the line....

Well I been on vacation since December 17 and been building my donkey off. I could get uesd to that kind of life, sleeping late and building till 11:00 pm. Thats the life! Hope you all been doing the same.

Keep on Gluing

I admire you builders. I restore planes evry few years, and find this challenging enough. The difference is ,i am not doing much engineering. When i need ribs or other parts i order them. You people are building parts.I wish i had the time and tenacity.I am very lucky on this current supercub rebuild. 20 year old cover came off and the airframe was in excellent shape.First time i wont need to do any welding. The wings are excellent as well, just prep, paint and recover. This will take 4 months or so to rebuild,i cant imagine the patience you people have.Just want to say i admire you.

Does Re-Building count....? Seawind 3000:yes:

Well, I'm not sure about all the kits but the Rans S7 kit kinda looks like a giant erector set. There are some parts that need to be fabricated but not many (mainly just cutting stock and drilling holes) then it's just bolt/rivet/screw/glue it all together.

Missa

PS Can't wait to get out of work today.... it's Tuesday which is airplane day.

How far along in the process are you?

John

Well, We took invintory, orgnised the shop and made out a cross-reference list for easy part retrevial. Read the assembly manual and decided the course of action for next Tuesday, looks like we will finally be getting to start putting stuff together next week. We are staring with the tail then working on the wings. Not the recomended order but due to juggling the parts between the shed and the garage... we just don't want to move the big parts yet.... BURRRRRRR!!!!!

I am quite well versed on your area, and can more appreciate the plan, it do get cold there.

So... John.... How close are you, and are you experianced with Fabric? I took the hands on class at Osh last year and Rick is planing on taking it at Sun'n'fun. But having an experianced had to help start us off would sure be helpful. We think we will be ready for fabric in the late spring, after Sun'N'Fun.

My fues is almost done well the wood parts atleast, got fittings and controls to do yet, which I expect to go pretty fast. I have about as much experience in fabric as I do in building, this is my first, so every build day is a learning experience and an adventure into the unknown.

A few more weeks of wood, instrument pannel then controls and metal. Hope to get to the wings by April or May. Still got that engine thing to get figured out. aircraft or auto conversion. I thught I had one on the hook but I am not real certain thats gonna happen, so I'll keep on working and gluing and making alterations as I go.

No matter I expect to be done in 2 years, its a rolling 2 years but it keeps e focused.

Spring for your fabric is really exciting

John
