DUAL Garmin G5 HSI & PFD In Flight Demo - 430W & STEC 30 Autopilot

Hey, thanks! Omigosh, I haven't touched that site in better than 13 years... I haven't even looked at it since 2005. I shudder to think what may still be there.

I do sometimes get email from PA-30 buyers asking for advice, since they found my airplane online.

Here's the panel as of December... really looking forward to the HSI. I'm also going to update the EDM 760 to the 790, which I'll be able to do after I get rid of the non-GS CDI. (Need to free up that hole since the 790's orientation covers up one and a half instrument holes.)

That’s a great panel. Hope to be flying something that nice someday! Dual G5’s will be awesome!

How is the Course Arrow set on the G5? Is there a knob or is it automatic based upon the GPS course or ILS course from the navigator? I have never flown an HSI and I see the mechanical HSIs had a Course arrow set knob.

You mean heading indicator? With the knob, push, turn, push. OBS via GPS.

I think (but could be wrong) that he means adjusting the CDI like on the old mechanical HSIs. On those units, you could actually rotate the CDI itself, not just the heading bug.

And I believe the answer to that is, it's all automatic from the GTN, unless you use OBS mode on the GTN, in which case you can "rotate" the CDI per whatever course you set in the GTN. Correct? I don't yet have the HSI, so this is my understanding without practical experience using it.

Secondary question - when flying an ILS or VOR course, does another submenu item appear on the G5 which lets you set the course? Or must that all be done from the GTN?

There is an actual term for an HSI that does this. I read it in the G5 literature, though now I couldn't tell it to you.

Interesting question. The course should be manual for radio nav (of course) so there’d have to be some facility for that.

Great explanation, thanks. Guess I should have cracked open my G5 pilot's guide, it's right on my iPad. Heh.

Short of having two knobs (sometimes I wish they did have two) this is about the best/simplest interface imaginable. Really impressed with this combo for this price.

My gripe and it’s a nitpick but they use same interface as GTN and GP...I have to fight the urge to treat it as a touch display.

Ha! Me too. Like a dolt, I've stabbed the screen of the G5 with my pointer finger a couple of times.

On the other hand, it's nice having cross-display similarities in terms of interface, between the G5 and GTN650.

Quite happy I went with an all-Garmin panel. It's going to really pay off as the rest of this inexpensive stuff comes out.

The King audio panel and KX-155 still need to be upgraded but for now they work fine.
