Weather Underground is now useless.

Weather Underground's highly inaccurate temperature for this morning. The real weather is in small print at the top of their site.

Weather Underground allows the user to select individual weather reporting sites, and judging by the ones available in my neighborhood, I think a lot of them have been installed by homeowners and connected to the Internet. I've noticed anomalous readings at times, and attributed it to the possibility that such sites are not professionally installed or maintained.

I see what you mean. When I open the site it normally shows Santa Rosa. I am nowhere near Santa Rosa, but I think my ISP is based there. When I allow the site to use my location it normally selects "Outer Richmond". Today I scrolled down to the nearby stations. Those neighbor reports are pretty useless. I love that the range is from 88F to -84F.

Interesting. The 17 stations in my neighborhood are all reporting plausible temperatures today, and in a relatively narrow range (55.7 to 59.4 deg. F).

Mari:

Do, please, stay the hell AWAY from the Mid-Richmond District.

Just in case, because we love you.

Mine is showing no temperatures or data at all on the Web version using the closest station. It's showing temperature in the "Change Station" view and on the app, but not on the Web. Kind of an odd problem.

Are you using the default station for your area, or one that you picked from the drop down list?

It was the default station. It's now the gone station, and a different station is the default.

The strange thing was that it seemed to have valid data in the map and on the app, but not on the Web site, right up until it disappeared. Maybe it was cached data. The WX conditions haven't changed much today. It's hovered +/- a degree or two from 30F with clouds and light snow pretty much all day, so cached data would still look valid.

I passively know the owner of the station. I'll ask him the next time I run into him. Maybe he got pizzed off at WU and took it offline. His webcam is also gone.

It's not WU's fault but my home weather station which I feed to WU seems to run about 10F too high. I need to take it down and replace it with something less broken. Will probably keep feeding WU though for now.

You would think that IBM as a technology company could figure out how to run a website. Makes you wonder about their other products.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. sTOP YOU'RE KILLING ME!

I worked for IBM for 37 years.
IBM has a brilliant Research Division. Maybe the best in the world.
And that's it.
IBM couldn't sell water in the Sahara or heat in the Arctic.
There was never a product, service or acquisition or idea that IBM didn't destroy in months.

My ex- worked for them. First at Wappinger's Falls then, when we moved to the DC area, for FSD.

I tried to give them some business in the 90's and the group bidding on our project never gave me a price (we bought HP equipment, and retired some AS400 stuff a couple of year later in favor of PC-based systems). Later I looked at buying a company spun out of IBM... in the 2012 timeframe that company was still using Rolm telephone stuff.

Sadly, the original home of IBM in Endicott is but a very small ghost of what it once was.

All that is a way of saying I agree with you and pointing out the dripping sarcasm in my comment that you referenced.

Interesting, I use the "Storm" app on both my iPad and droid phone. It's driven by weather underground (I think). It still seems to be working fine.......

It's a great app.

Agreed - my go to for initial planning days out.....and also to plan outdoor activities by hourly forecasts..

So, I've been getting pop up notifications for a month now that "Storm" is going away in a couple of weeks. It's being replaced by "Storm Radar" which is a Weather Channel product. I downloaded it and IT SUCKS! It has none of the features that Storm had (well, it actually has the features but you have to drill pretty deep to get to them, they're not right there on the home screen in front of you). Hey, but at least it crashes frequently!

So what else is out there that has radar, 10 day forecasts, the ability to save multiple cities, all provided in a great, logical, easy to navigate package?

Here's a Storm screenshot, it is (was) awesome. Note the save cities across the top.

What products. IBM hasn't done any product development in years. All they have done is acquire companies and ruin them.

I knew that when they acquired the company we used for our code management. I knew the end was coming when there was a README.HTM file in the distribution. Clicking on it presented me with a page that told me for the version release notes I could go to documents.ibm.com (or something like that) and type G1284-2134 (or some similar gibberish) in the search line. What part of "hypertext" do they not understand?

Getting back to WU, yeah it sucks. It's prime was to allow those with personal weather stations to report and for you to see the reports from those around you. It sucks for that. I've got a WU-reporting station. You can't tell what data is coming from my station now and what they're just randomly substituting in (presumably from the AWOS six miles away).

Basically true. Sad times for investors. They do have Watson which is utilized in apps like ‘Weather Channel’ but who really uses that for our Aviation needs other than the average bear on the street?

Servicing the IBM Selectric (and Standards, and mag decks, Displaywriters and Composers) is what paid my rent for many years.

Well, I switched to Intellicast after the Weather Channel bought and ruined Wunderground, and now the sons-of-******* went and bought Intellicast and ruined that site too. (redirects to the ruined Wunderground site).
I wouldn't watch the Weather Channel is they PAID me. Filthy Bastards!

I wouldn't consider IBM a technology company. What have they done for us lately, I mean since the late 70s ?

I still use Wunderground because their ten-day forecasts have graphs of predicted temperature, pressure, preciptation chance, and wind, and their hourly forecasts also extend out ten days (not that hourly forecasts are reliable that far out).

I use wunderground because our EXCELLENT alternative to expensive AWOS "Say Weather," reports to them.

Private/public airport, let's see AWOS $100,000 plus $10,000 every 2 years to calibrate???

Or "Say Weather" $4,500 one time.

All airport (M94) improvements are volunteer/donations..............You do the math!

I had it bookmarked for so long, so needed to figure out how I navigated there in the first place!

I think if you go to the main NWS webpage (click top right icon in my linked page) then go to your local forecast (type your zip code) and scroll all the way down you will see a choice for hourly WX forecast.

Does that work?

That works for me.

I’ve gravitated to Dark Sky - find the navigation of the site and their graphics are much less confounding than Windy. Seems current and forecasts are right on.

.....but then there’s always MAV/MOS for longer range 3-5d planning.

Looks decent. And my neighbor about 500 feet from me has a station, which is even better. He used to be on WU. Now I know where he went.

WU still works for me, but not very reliably. Lots of times I have to force-stop the app and restart it. It still works more often than not, but it seems like a lot of the local stations are gone.

Rich

"Try again later."
It's been 2 days since I got a weather report for WU.

Yeah, I get the same error. But when I force-stop the app, it works for a while. How long varies from a few hours to a few days.

When it works, I still prefer its layout. Maybe I should try to duplicate it.
