DIY iPad Yoke Mount??

Yeah, I could probably spend half a day designing one, and another day or two making and revising it for any gotchas. Anybody ever made one or seen one and can describe it? I'm thinking that anything more than aluminum sheet, velcro, welding rod, and pvc water fittings would probably be less expensive in the long run just to buy, but then again, I'm an inveterate maker.

Cessna 182A, if that makes a difference.

Suggestions?

I used the cover that came with my Otterbox case. Put Superlok Velcro tape on the back and use RAM balls and arms. I use 2 for triangulation and security.

Mine is for a side window mount, but you could use a similar idea for your yoke mount.

when I thaw out and get back to my plane I can show you my awesome yoke mount setup. years ago when I posted about it I got ripped a new one but it's served me well going from rental to rental and now still works in The Grasshopper.
 
I'm thinking small c clamp with a couple of angles welded to the jaws, a piece of pipe welded to the top and some sort of alumuminum plate to hold what ever device you want........
 
From what I've seen, the cost/benefit of DIY yoke mounts is just too high compared to buying one. I do have two DIYs I use in the cockpit. One is a Stratux suction mount. That one's a hybrid - a RAM suction mount (which I already had) attached to a DIY cradle (which cost about $4).

The complete DIY is my action cam tie down ring mount which cost quite a bit more than the final product because of all the mistakes along the way. But it was fun.

Old cell phone used as a tablet for Avare, a hybrid case from ebay with a Ram ball mount and arm.

tablet mount from the previous post, mounted to the panel. Used a Ram ball mount into an unused instrument hole cover.

Mount for a Nexus7 tablet, Assembled from a rubber case from bobjgear, a piece of birch plywood from a local craft store, and a Ram ball mount.
Fasteners are #10 countersunk screws, tinnerman washers and acorn nuts.

I'll offer two, not yoke mounted, my planes don't have yokes, but homemade: The first is for a smartphone with Avare, made of thin (1/16") plywood with an aluminum tab on the back velcro'd to the cockpit side rail. The phone just slips into it and there are cutouts on the side to access the buttons.P6162290.jpg

The second is for a larger 8" tablet, and is made as a kneeboard You can also see the empty phone holder here:

The kneeboard is made of 1/8" plywood with fir side rails, and a liner of galvanized steel for the magnetic case of the tablet to hold it in place.
 
aight @weirdjim , as promised, here is a quick vid of my mount. flame away. if anyone needs CAD drawings or specs of my plans, price breakdowns, part list, etc, let me know.



 
There are lots of ways to do this for sure. If you search youtube there's a metal ram mount for less than 20 bucks that works great. I also wanted to DIY but buying a cheep one is the way to go.
