I'm French and I'll come to USA

I know the definition of racist and this ain't it.

To further illustrate my comment about the Asian population in the Phoenix area - it is my belief that the PHX approach controllers can sometimes have a bad attitude because they have to repeat themselves several times to one student and that, several times a day, because of certain flight schools in the area that cater to mostly Asian student pilots. I think that the controllers do a great job of interpreting what the students are trying to say but I'd bet a lot of them are going bald from pulling their hair out in the effort. As an English speaker it is sometimes very difficult just getting through to ATC because they spend so much time with the Asian students.

That isn't racist, its just a fact.

Were you the same guy whose kids think that the Chinese restaurant scene in A Christmas Story is racist?

Don't make me break out the definition again. :sosp:
Why would I think that, I almost peed my pants at that movie when it came out.

Allow me to bold what you quoted to make it more clear.

Sorry, sometimes I read too quickly and miss words, no, my kids liked that scene too and have never called it racist, but one of my daughters did say it was impolite to call Asian people Oriental after she heard someone say it, so the next time we drove by the restaurant I mentioned I pointed the sign out to her, the restaurant is owned by Asians and is pretty good from what I hear.

I don't think "Asian" was a thing in the period depicted in that movie. I grew up not long after (70s) and can remember "made in Japan" used to be a bad thing.

I know the feeling Tim. When I worked CBM tower there were over 100 Iranian student pilots along with a few other country's student pilots. We even had 3-4 Iranian trainee controllers. I was a part time CFI over at KGTR and one of the Iranian controllers was my student. I picked him up from another CFI who tried everything he knew and couldn't solo him. Got to where I couldn't either and the boss basically told him to hang it up. He wasn't happy about it. He was the only student pilot I could not solo. Fun times!

I know there's a lot of Chinese student pilots that fly out of Newnan GA at Falcon Aviation Academy. Think there was a thread a couple years ago about a Bonanza crashing or something over at Carrolton with one of the students flying over there or something.

I know that there aren't many flight schools in Asia and those that they have are terribly expensive which is why they send their students to the US to learn to fly. But some of these kids can't speak English at all and I wonder what kind of aptitude test they had to pass in order to become accepted in these schools. It is a dangerous situation at the least. Sometimes an English speaking instructor is quick to provide controllers a response to what they need but other times it would seem that they are either asleep or the student is solo.

Here in Austin I'm pretty sure a French two year EE degree would be plenty to get a tech job in QA, testing, help desk, etc. No need to work at McDonalds.

He can't speak Mandarin.

But he can play one ha ha

I will tell you what I heard from my Polish friend (I am of Polish descent too, he, he) who was a flight instructor at the flight school in Hillsboro, Or where most students were from China. Those students arrived on the Chinese government sponsored plan so they passed initial English tests in China. But some spoke really bad English on arrival so it happened occasionally that a student was sent home (not back to China, yet) to work on his English. But they were on a harsh regime - any failure to pass a test or a remedial test - he would be going back to China having to repay the government for all costs, it was brutal to them, a huge incentive to study hard.

So of course a question from a French citizen about training in the US has to turn into an ode to Donald Trump’s view of the world.

So predictable at this point.

DZ_Power, the way things are in the US right now, train just about anywhere else. Consider Canada, and Québec, New Brunswick or Ottawa in particular if you are more comfortable in a French speaking environment. If you want to immerse yourself in English, go to Halifax, Toronto or Vancouver.

Regardless, you’ll be more welcome than just about anywhere in Trump America.

Complete baloney.

Unfortunately, it isn’t baloney, and there are news stories today to the effect that applications by foreign students to the US are way down.

Indeed, news organisations outside the US are pretty much uniformly reporting Trump’s tweets today as raising a serious question, if it wasn’t already evident, about his mental stability.

Thank god no moderators read @Rory's mindless indictments of the POTUS. They could be considered political.

Uh, help me here, some sea change occurred and foreign students don't want to go to US Universities, and this has been evidenced in the time since his election?

Provide some data on that, s'il te plait.

Oh for god’s sake. I suggested that Canada, especially French speaking Canada, might be more welcoming to a French student pilot than the U.S. under the current US administration, and that there are parts of Canada where it is easy to study and work in both French and English.

As someone who has been a resident of France and Canada and who is currently a resident of the United States, I expressed an opinion. Shocker.

The idea that my comments amount to an “indictment”, let alone a “mindless indictment”, of the President of the United States, is rubbish.

It’s far more entertaining to leave the merits of the current American President, this week, to Messrs Bannon, Tillerson and Wolff, and, from week to week, to the experts on cable news and the major American newspapers.

P.S. Your decision to address me with “s'il te plait“ comes across, as I’m sure it was meant to, as condescending. It makes you sound like a child, aged about twelve, who thinks, erroneously, that he’s being clever. Maybe think about that next time.

Yeah, Bonanza driver wasn't talking and ran them over on short final. All 3 dead.

Yes, it should be emphasized that the Chinese students were not to blame for this accident. It was squarely the old dude in the Bonanza that was at fault.

I'm late to this thread, but if the OP is still following this train wreck, I'll just add that 20 years ago I got my training for my PPL, my IR and commercial at Oakland Flyers at KOAK. Some of the same instructors are still there because they just like teaching. I have since done many IPCs and BFRs there as well as endorsements and checkouts over the years. It's a great place to train and KOAK is an ideal airport for it. I would highly recommend them.

The huge downside is as others have pointed out, living expenses. Everything is expensive in the Bay Area. California in general is a great place for flight training and there are parts of the state with more reasonable living expenses. Maybe Fresno, or Merced, somewhere in the San Joaquin valley. Otherwise I would stick to the South West of the US, or Florida due to the high percentages of VFR days and milder IMC conditions. Now that I think of it, having to routinely deal with strong crosswinds, crazy turbulence and thunderstorms would actually be good training, so maybe California isn't so great.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled POA pizzing match.

Oww, this topic has lived without me :cool: But ... We are not here to talk about racism ( oh really  ). Some news I have to give here :

- I have actually 90h of flying, whose 55h as a PIC.
- I have got the first semester of my Associate's, 75% passing, that's good.

After the news, I've seen some things :
- I have found two schools : Oakland Flyers and FlyRight ( based KVGT North Las Vegas ). So if you have views about those schools, I'm waiting ;)

I also have questions about Oakland Flyers, and mostly about FAR and about self-studying :
- Does the content of their courses respect FAR ?? Because when I see only 10h pour the Commercial, I doubt ...
@Hippike : What is the name of your friend's school ?? I'm interested.
- Is it easy to get IR when you study by yourself, I'd like to economize money but I don't want to spoil the quality of the training
- 50$/h for a CFI ?? You're sure ?? It's better than regionals

Finally, don't talk me about President Trump or about politics, plz. I thank to Canada, but there getting a P121 F/O hard is too long, and salaries are not attractive ( because the CA$ is not attractive ). It's better in America and in all cases, it will be better than France ...

... Remember

Remember, Trump won the presidency via a national election, contrary to press reports not everyone dislikes him, suggest you follow your own advice.

Yeah I know that French newspaper are not the best solutions to get informations about Trump and the USA. Unemployement rate is as low as 4%, it's 10% in France ...

When you live in France, you know that the most part of the world is better than France. But you're right, I'll follow my own advice.

@SkyDog58 : CAD is too bad. So salaries are also bad. For example, a Jazz pilot who flies 80h/month gets 3500$, it makes 2300€. In the same time an Endeavor pilot who flies 80h gets 3750$ per month, it makes 3000€. And I don't talk about retension bonuses ( 20k$ / year ).

It's not only the French press, the American press is attempting to destroy Trump, the problem they are having is he keeps winning and their desperation shows, to those who really pay attention anyway, don't want to totally derail your thread, just want to make sure you know, not all Americans hate Trump. I hope you figure out how to get your dream and as I said before, don't discount your electronic education as a way to easily finance your dream.

A lot of America bashes America.

But they still stay! Especially that those stated they'd leave the country if a certain someone was elected. Looking at you Cher!

WTF?

Maybe that tells us America needs a little bashing?

Bash all you want, your right to as a US citizen. But I will say it's the best country to live in, and I've lived in the PI, Japan, Korea, and Germany. Oh and Alabama. Wait, that's in the Southeastern US.

I don't know about 'easy' but it can be done if you have propensity for self-study, I did it, there is plenty of good self-study material video/books.

Actually this is quite inexpensive for the Bay Area, I am paying more than double that amount.

Commercial only requires 10 hours of instruction. It's a fun certificate to get.

That's what I understood. I would know if you can get IR theory with book and E6B and questions bank. I think 50$/h is the rate for an experienced CFI, with thousands of flight hours, what about a beginner ???
