Proud new owner of a Garmin 430W, dual G5's and a FlightStream 210. Some questions.

I picked up my 172 a couple days ago after a month in the avionics shop. I had considerable work done and have a few questions for those that have been flying /G for a while. I know the G5 is brand new, but maybe someone can help.

Plane also has an STEC 30 + ALT autopilot.

  • The G5 supports GPSS emulation. I find the 430W will anticipate turns (has the dashed lines and everything) and turn the plane early, but I will still overshoot anything but the gentlest of turns. This shouldn't be an issue in a 110 kt plane. Can this be adjusted?

  • The AI G5 shows a bit nose-up in level flight. Other forum discussions lead me to believe that per STC the G5 must be leveled to when the plane is leveled on stands, not "straight and level flight". One argument forthis is that wouldn't it be nice to know you were flying a bit nose-up to maintain level flight? Or, read a different way, this method shows you where the true horizon is. Unfortunately, a 50 y/o steam gauge, you can adjust in flight, which is what we're all used to.

  • The FlightStream 210 interfaces with Foreflight amazingly well. However, the accuracy widget will now show the Connext accuracy signal vs the Stratus signal, even when you've selected the Stratus as your GPS. Really, this shouldn't matter, except the Garmin antenna only gets about 5m accuracy whereas the Stratus is always 1m or less. This seems more like a bug than anything, or maybe Foreflight assumes we want to know the Garmin hard-mount antenna's accuracy no matter what?

Can't help you with your questions, but would love to see some video of your HSI during some flights. Course tracking and glideslope operation specifically. Curious to see how it actually looks since not many have posted video of it yet.

So accuracy better than 15 feet is important? Shouldn't Garmin be the place to look for your answers? You just paid $$$ for their equipment.

Dare I ask why you use a Stratus after spending what you did on the installed hardware?

Most IFR GPS units have a sensitivity (5 miles, 1 mile and .3 miles per tick mark). Frequently setting this to the most sensitive setting helps the autopilot fly the airplane better. You might want to try that.

It's the holiday weekend.

I had the Stratus first and still use it. There is no harm in using multiple GPS antennas. What if the GA35 becomes disabled in flight? Wouldn't it be nice to have the Stratus up and running already?

Mine was the same after leveling and installation. It is easy for the owner to adjust the G5 to level it for normal flight. That's what I did and it's been just the way I like it. Just go into the menu and look around or look at the handbook that came with it. If you still need help, let me know and I'll get the steps for you.

Isn't there some kind of adapter necessary for the G5 to drive analog a/p's? The GAD 29 or some such? I know that kind of gpss steering bank problem is corrected in the 901 gpss module by swapping out resistors.
