They all do it. Every time an electrical engineer designs a new harness they order specialty prototype connectors. Worked in a prototype wiring harness lab in Detroit for years. WHY CAN'T YOU USE STANDARD CONNECTORS???

The good thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.

Because we don't make a dime off of selling cars. So we have to come up with proprietary parts, only available at the dealer, in order to sell them at inflated prices, to cover the cost of building and selling cars. Then, after a few years when the aftermarket folks start making and selling these parts, we have to make new and improved ones.
