The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
Interesting idea for an App, especially with the larger iPad Pros coming into use.

I'm curious as to how practical it is.....

I'm surprised there aren't more variometer-like audible alerts for being on altitude/heading.

ObPoA: I think there was a guy doing that for AoA.
 
sounds cool. does it actually alert you as you approach, or pass an altitude?
if so, would gps altitude be accurate enough to make it useful?

or maybe it's just a 'dumb' counter, for pilot to reference?
 
the aspen has an altitude 'bug' alerter that at first I thought was annoying but I'm starting to use it and like it. set it at your assigned altitude and it'll holler at you if you stray from it. now I get to pay even less attention to what I'm doing!

Using the altitude and airspeed bugs are a good practice with the Aspen, even without the vocal alerter hardware. The bugs make the tapes as easy to quickly read as the steam gauges.

It has taken me a long time to convert from using the steam gauges to using the tapes. The steam gauges are right beside the Aspen on the 'kota so it isn't a big deal either way.
 
I was wondering the other day why Foreflight doesn’t have something like this, as well as a function to apply an adjustment to its GPS altitude so that it reads identical to the aircraft’s altitude.
 
The plethora of new and exciting in-flight apps - checklists, altitude alerters, augmented reality - makes me think of the 1970's gasoline crisis when all sorts of devices to supposedly save fuel were being marketed, prompting someone to remark that if he added all those devices, he'd expect to not only never run out of gas, but have a surplus to sell to others.

I downloaded it... worth playing with for $4. I'll letcha know how it goes.
 
I downloaded the app and played with it today in flight. I read the user manual beforehand - it's a bit involved.

Though the app developer tried to think of everything it simply didn't work very well. I tried it on an iPad Mini 2 and an iPad Pro. The altitude was usually off by 150 to 190 feet.

I made a manual correction (part of the app) and then climbed to a new altitude, 1000 feet higher, and the error creeped back up to 70 feet. It was a lot of cockpit wrangling to mess with the correction, set up the app for 'Swipe In, Swipe Out' mode, and interact with it every time I was assigned an altitude change.

As a final data point it was a local flight within a 30nm radius over Central Florida in very static weather conditions. The altimeter setting remained at 30.21 the whole time.

This one looks to be challenged out of the gates, although I'll try it again when I head north in a few days. This concept may simply not be functionally feasible with an iPad or iPhone. If it takes an abnormal amount of pilot interaction for an altitude alert function the app is a liability rather than a benefit.
 
Okay, six hours of messing with it - it's worthless. Never got it accurate enough. Lots of user interaction required. Hard to manage the swipe-in, swipe-out mode. Frustrating to operate. Deleting the app.
 
I just found this thread. This app has really matured since it’s introduction and the review it got by iPadPilotNews last year. V2 added Baro altitude reference and IFR Minimums alerting. Here’s a demo video of the app on a flight into Chicago Midway. Very Cool!
