FAA diagnosed substance abuse

For the other readers: A BAC of 0.15 would put me on a ventilator or in the morgue. The original posters' son had a BAC of 0.15 and was trying to operate motor vehicle.

So, even at a young age the >0.15 BAC demonstrates TOLERANCE.
The only way to get that tolerant is to drink a lot and for a long time, so your son has been doing a good bit o'drinking.... :(

It reallly does say a lot about ur character to cowardly make comments that don't pertain to the OP. Get a life, a hobby or some common sense and stay out of conversations you know nothing about. Respectively...

But statistically, AA does NOT work. The overall recovery rate is about the same for those who go into AA as those who don't do anything whatsoever. I'm not arguing that people may find support and camaraderie through the program, but when it comes to basing some standards on it, it's hokum.

But the FAA doesn't care about that, and frankly, they really don't need to. They are looking at the AA participation not because AA will cure the guy, but to show that he's expending the effort to resolve things. Of course, they're still going to test him from time to time, and that's a good thing.

Too bad passing the test is not enough for them. Thank you for commenting. Have a blessed day.

Yup . . . that's exactly it. All tests can be faked or gamed. The only one who knows if you're being solid in recovery is the addict. . . . you wanna lie to yourself.

My weakness is ice cream and cake. Naturally god made me a type II diabetic. Or I did. The irony is not lost.

For a lark, in college I wrote a couple of mainframe computer programs to see how many digits I could get on a five minute student pass. In the process, I accidentally memorized the above number of digits.

You didn't. Your genes did. (Or God, same thing IMO.) You don't eat your way into diabetes, but if you eat high carb your genetic heritage will be uncovered. I didn't make that up it's from Blood Sugar 101. That lady really knows her stuff. So don't beat yourself up.

I have the same problem, carb addiction. (Only still pre-diabetes.) I joke about it, but it's not really funny. I think it all started on my first birthday when they put a cake in front of me. I've been obsessed with cake ever since. Or cookies, or pie, etc. Or bread or pasta, it's a carb addiction and it escalates very quickly. I can only control it if I pretty much abstain completely. Eat only meat or very paleo.

I read where if your certificates are revoked due to lying about a DUI, you can get them back but one must start all over. You are a new student pilot.

That is an expensive way to return to flying.

Close. You have to retake all the written exams and log at least 3 hours in preparation for the checkride then retake the ride for every certification you wish to get back.

Unfortunately I had a colleague experience this recently. From revocation to returning to work required almost two years and a huge cash outlay, not to mention 24 months of missed income. Oh and being in HIMS.

....and he’s lucky. For lying, they could invoke the moral character clause of part 61 and keep him out forever.

Remember Lyle Prouse? He went to prison...

Very true. He was given an opportunity to learn a valuable lesson at a bargain price (compared to permanent revocation or a fatal car wreck).

Thankfully he has taken advantage of the opportunity.

Technically the “good moral character” only applies to applicants for the ATP certificate. It doesn’t appear anywhere else in Part 61.

Luckily any ratings below ATP, you can apparently be an immoral heathen. ;)

LOL...

Learn something every day.

I always just assumed the moral clause could be applied to everyone. I never Payed attention to it for two reasons. First I don’t trust government at all and figured the morality reg was another subjective catch all the FAA could use to take my certificates. Second I’m really good at keeping my poor moral standards private. :)

Haha it’s just FAR trivia that’s kinda fun. We use it as banter at the airport ...

“You’re the ATP! You’re supposed to be the one with the good moral character! Not me!” ;)

It’s just another reg they’ll throw at an ATP though, you’re right.

For the rest of us, we just get the Careless and Reckless rule as our catch all.

ATPs get two. :)

FedGov certainly doesn’t belong in the business of judging moral or immoral behavior, that’s for sure. Hahaha.

I don’t think even the strictest ALJ would rule in favor of a case brought ONLY on the “morality” or “immorality” of an ATP certificate holder. FAA might get laughed out of court on that one.

If nothing else, the lawyer would have fun...

“Have you SEEN the divorce rates amongst professional pilots, Your Honor?!” ROFLMAO...

It’d be a fun court transcript to read though. Accusing any human being of immoral, has a 100% track record of being accurate, last I checked. ;)

I bet almost every ATP has a speeding ticket. Immoral bastards! All convicted criminals too, I tell ya! Pull all their certificates! LOL. :)

Used to be on the flight instructor if I recall. When it was dropped I seem to recall my instructor pointing out that it meant he wasn't going to lose his certificate.

I bet the "moral character" violation would stick if it were due to serious crimes.

The character isn't so much a problem but the medical folks will want to look at criminal activity to see if it is the manifestation of a psychological disorder (which is why they ask on the application).

Of course, there's the laundry list of crimes that annoys the hell out of the TSA (originally it was the SIDA badge list) that could cause you other grief.

In one of my airline ground recurrent classes, the instructor told us of his buddy who lost his ATP for mooning a carload of women.

There’s got to be more to that story. And of course, being of lower moral character than the ATPs around here, I would love to know what. Hahahaha. ;)

I thought your point was about what an ALJ would accept.

Ahhh true. I see.

They do like laws and such, which probably means they went into the right line of work. ;)

Many in that profession do equate morality with laws, too. Which is fun. You can poke them with questions like, “Then why is it illegal to loan a vacuum cleaner to the neighbor in the City and County of Denver?” ;)

Lots of lovely laws on the books that have not a single thing to do with morality.

I’ve rolled through a stop sign or two, which is why I’ll probably never go for ATP... they might find out about my sordid past. :)

I wonder if the ATP who did gender change surgery on his friend in a hotel room here in DEN with no medical training, meets the criteria? LOL.

I disagree. There is a recipe for T2 - eat foods with a high glycemic index + sedentary lifestyle + time. The person will add weight, the weight will inhibit insulin and T2 will result. The only variable is time.

You don't think genetic predisposition doesn't play a role?

Yeah... I’m sure there was. This was many years back so I’ll never get the rest of the story.
