Do patients have a right to get a copy of their lab tests as soon as they are available or is there some federal or state rule which allows the lab staff (or MD staff) to withhold info til the Dr reviews it?
(test results were completed days ago, within hours of dropping off sample but staff won't reveal results so patient waits, while treatment is being withheld)

Some Drs have these online 'portals' where you can see results instantly.

Try your insurance company, if it's got a portal. I can't get my doctor's office to tell me anything, the staff is horrible, they put you on hold, never call back, etc. I had resigned myself to waiting for my next appointment to get test results.

So one day I was logging into my insurance company portal to sign up for next year's benefits and lo and behold there was a "your records" tab. I clicked on it, and there were my test results!

I get an email within a couple of days of having blood drawn telling me that lab results are available through the portal. I sort of thought that was pretty common in this modern connected world.

Recently I had some tests and they only gave me a summary for the results. AME said that's not enough, go back and get the real thing (10 pages). I went to the hospital to ask and they flat out denied that anything else existed (more than 1 person). I could fill out a form if I wanted, I was told, but there was no point since the records I wanted didn't exist. I filled out a form and ticked the box for "give me everything you have on me". Next day I was in my Dr's office and they were able to download and print the full 10 pages lol. Weeks later I got the full report again in the mail from the hospital. It made me realize paperwork is all they understand...some of these places will lie straight to your face until you challenge them to put it in writing.

I recently had an MRI and an UltraSound. The day of my UltraSound I asked about a disc for my MRI and they burned it for me on the spot. The same day I went with my wife as she had an MRI. I asked about my images from the UltraSound and they burned the disc right then.

The reports for both were available online the same day they were done.

Kaiser is pretty good about it the results are available online pretty much as they come in. Sometimes in just a few hours.

Most of mine show up online when I get them done. The ones that don't typically are the ones that aren't performed by my Doctor or the megalohealth system he's a part of. For example, the ones from LabCorp (or was it Qwest) I have to log into their system to retrieve (or badger them to fax to me).

Just about every imaging study I've done in recent memory has given me a CDROM on the spot.
