Is there a blood test done on a 2nd class medical? If so, whats it for? And is it something that is a common issue?

Yes, there's a blood test for drugs...just kidding. Never been a fan of giving blood samples on flight physicals. Can take shots all day long but something about watching blood leaving my arm. :(

Wimp.

Wasnt there some poor guy on here who had to turn his head a cough or something during his medical, must be some odd AMEs out there.

Oh 20 years of giving blood in the military, I got used to it. One time at Miramar I was giving a sample and some young ROTC kid is next to me doing his first flight physical. I hear him say " oh, that's not as bad as I thought." Two seconds later the corpsman leaves him and Blaaam! He's out. Eyes roll to the back of the head and blood spurting out all over the place. My corpsman leaves me with the needle still in my arm to assist the other guy. A mess! For the rest of the day I see that dude at all the other stations with blood all over his jeans. Not a very good first physical for a future pilot! :D

I do every year. Am I getting screwed or something???

I know all the AMEs aren't doing the hernia check for class 2s.

Everyone's different! It doesn't bother me at all.

Another funny blood story was my Army retirement physical. I'm giving my blood sample as the guy across from me is finishing up. He gets up and walks around the corner and blaaam! A green camo flash is all I see. Some nurse is in the hall way yelling "I need help! I need help!" Again, my nurse leaves me with the needle in my arm to go help out. A door swings open across the hall and my battalion Sgt Major is standing there looking down on this guy. He looks at me and I shrug my shoulders and say something like "guy can't handle his alcohol Sgt Major." :D Nurse said they almost always get at least one fainter per day.

I've always wondered if folks like this ever get over it. I've been through some difficult times, sometimes feeling a bit like being an animal in a butcher's shop, but damn I was probably more insterested in seeing it all myself than grossed out. My mom being a nurse, wanted pictures of everything.

Well it's not exactly a PTSD event for me. Just not something I looked forward to on my flight physicals. I know people who are terrified of a lousy Flu shot. I couldn't imagine them getting the air shots to the butt that got in boot camp or getting pricked 13 times for Small Pox! :D

Military life is full of uncomfortable situations. Giving a blood sample wasn't very high on my uncomfortable list.

A couple of friends went to donate plasma recently for some extra income. They said the blood was cold coming back in. Nope nope nope. I donated blood for a blood drive a couple of times and that was pretty weird.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't be a good blood / plasma donor. I'll do sperm all day long but I'm keeping my blood!

I don't get the turn your head and cough anymore........ I must be getting old and ugly.

I feel so... not used.....

Schedule a physical with @Velocity173's AME then!

I think my AME is so old that maybe he doesn't know that the hernia check isn't required??? I know guys who go to a hot female AME and she doesn't touch their junk at all. I need to go to her.

Speaking of female flight docs, 35 AOA might have heard of one in Navy El Centro...:D
