2017 in Review

...Finally closed on a plane (see avatar pic) After numerous flakes, failures and freak issues with finding a plane, I found, closed and bought a solid honest plane. Oh, flew it home. California to Chicago area. KREI to KSEZ day one. KSEZ to KDPA (with stops along the way) the next. If anyone cares- (KREI --KSEZ--KMHK--KDPA) Was one of those things I will remember on my death bed type experience tying down MY plane at home after flying it home. I still remember the last approach and landing in every detail. I couldnt have done it without my buyers agent and the ferry pilot. Both went over and above to help a stranger like me...

BUT...:needpics:

Let’s see:
- got married
- took a new job at a new company
- moved from the Midwest to San Diego
- bought a new house (still selling the old one if anyone is looking for a great house in Columbus let me know)
- expecting our first child in early '18
- oh, and did some flying too!

As mscard says 2018 is a goal. It will be an achievement when I get to fly again, and it will happen.

As far as Mrs. Z, see the picture in post #16.....

Yeah that's all of us, married or not, someone always yelling in your ear.

Flew 52 hours, which was basically the first 5 months of the year. Included 6 doggie flights, with one involving @arkvet. Flew through snow for the first time. Got to fly in @Radar Contact 's twin Cessna. Put a G5 in my plane. Moved to Germany in August. Haven't flown since. I miss it.

Worst year for flight time....

I had foot surgery and was grounded three months. I only managed 50 hours to date, typically 110ish. Just finished up annual and IFR cert. While at the avionics shop I had the old audio panel replaced with a PMA7000M BT. ADS-B was previously installed and I had the Garmin 530W, GDL88 and the flight stream 210 software updated. I brought the plane home yesterday and of course, it started to snow about an hour ago and calling for more white crap tomorrow.

-bought a 310/got a hangar
-flew this thing over 17 states (pretty good considering partial year of owning and upgrade down time)
-overhauled both props
-installed a Garmin G5
-WAAS'ed the 530
-installed an Insight Twin G4 Engine Monitor
-now that I can run it LOP, learned that I'm a fan...still got some injector tweaking
-installed a Garmin GTX345
-figured out what this whole new fangled ForeFlight thing is all about
-figured out that Jeppsen is making money hand over fist (have 3 subscriptions for the 530W, 430 and GMX200)
-got a clean bill of health from Blackstone on the oil
-cut my first set of filters and enjoyed the lack of metal
-had a scare about a silly proposed AD on both my engines (thank you TTCF, AOPA, COPA and Mike Busch!!)
-went to OSH and got great deals on the above new equipment
-went to Gaston's and met some cool people (going to stay longer next year)
-planning to head down to GMU so this south-east pilot stuck in yankee land can get a damn glass of tea...yes sweet...there's no other kind!

Plans for next year...fly more

2017-Got married, got the wife pregnant, flew a little fixed-wing, got my rotorcraft/gyroplane rating
2018-Have a new pilot born, hope to still fly quite a bit as long as the new pilot doesn't break the bank!

Sounds like I need to step up my game in 2018. You guys have done a lot!

180 hours and 3 more states...no kids but I have a plane... I figure it’s financially the same.

Got current again after an 8 year hiatus.
Flew about 75 hrs since March.
Got 30 hrs instrument, and hopefully finish up in February.
Thought A LOT about what my next plane will be :)

Got PPL in May, logged about 40 hours since.

Goal for 2018...get the wife to fly with me.

Still can't believe they let me actually fly a plane.

I didn't do much, except post on POA a lot to annoy certain members, and got banned from POA a lot. So you're probably good.

Well we have noticed you are trying to stay on Santa's 'good' list, as you have gone an extraordinarily long time without the ban hammer coming down.

Maybe you're mellowing out now you're a grandfather? :D

Nah. Too many points, another ban and I'm gone gone gone!

Started the year as a 135 chief pilot then went back to the start up 121 supplemental airline as chief pilot to see if a new investor could get us out of first gear.
Handed the certificate back to the FAA
Rejoined the ranks as a EMB-145 first officer
Finished my training in the EMB-145. My 6th jet type rating
Recruited to join their training department
Checked out as an EMB-145 simulator instructor
Flew some GA, never as much as I wanted
Prepping for my step daughter's wedding (big drain on cash)
Looking to move to Philadelphia early next year

- Finished my SP ticket (without completely filling my logbook, even)
- Took my first passenger, my son, for a ride
- Did my first $100 hamburger trip, also with my son
- Plan to get my towered airport endorsement before year end
- NA; led proposal teams at work, winning ~$1.2B of new business for my company
- NA; performed volunteer work for my church and for Samaritan's Purse

For 2018, I plan to
- Investigate getting my 3rd class medical and, if not too onerous, pursue either a Rec or Private ticket
- Fly as much as possible, do a few trips with my wife
- NA; grow my 401k at least 10% and continue retirement preparations (target is 4Q19)
- NA; spend some quality time with my motorcycle, guitars, shotguns, and fly rods

Flew too little, but one flight sticks out. Grabbed one of the club's planes (reserved well in advance) and flew my wife down to around Salem, Oregon on August 21 to watch the eclipse from the air. Spectacular!

2017
- Completed all flight requirements for the PPL
- Practiced real soft field landings and take-offs at LHBS
- Surprised my best friend on her 40th bday with a sightseeing flight over Budapest
- Got to see up close the last remaining (still airworthy) Lisunov-2
- Did aerobatic training in a Citabria and enjoyed every second of it

2018
- Pass the CR and take hubby on flights
- Start instrument rating
- Move to TX, buy a land with private airstrip, buy a plane, have goats and other farm animals (more of a dream than an actual plan;)

2017
Finally started working on my PPL (It only took 30 years to accomplish the confluence of both available time and available funds).
First landing at about the 6 hour mark.

Having a blast. Hoping '18 continues the trend.

After a 25-yr hiatus from flying I got my Flight Review and ICC. Had no trouble flying the plane but learning to operate the GPS was a whole different matter! The approaches came back quickly but I really miss the NDB's. They were always my favorite to fly and teach.:D

Didn't bother reinstating my CFI as I don't plan on teaching anyway. Had my share of students trying to kill me especially IFR and ME.

No I haven't. Not sure who'd be interested. But I may make a stab at it.
those of us who still believe we have to justify airplane ownership (Particularly twin) to ourselves would benefit. I've really enjoyed the handful of other posts on this topic

PS, will end 2017 as IR student. should have 10-15 hours of my IR done and 35 or so other hours of flying this year.

2018 IR checkride (single) then do MEL initial and potentially commercial (though that's more likely to be 2019)

Aiming for 100 hours in 2018 and potentially first plane purchase in the spring/summer
