“The legroom is great, if you’re a yard gnome.”

This one was my favorite line:

“Their planes make Larry King look young,” one participant observed.

That was funny timing. Matt Lauer was quick to point out that that THEY (on the Today Show) hadn't said that.

Larry King was on Today yesterday with his wife touting his charity that gives cardiac care to needy people. He looked like his age. I swear that once it appeared he dozed off during the interview, but he was there.

Mmmmm...MidEx cookies.

I always get funny looks when I jumpseat on Northwest or Continental wearing my US Airways ensignia.

"Why aren't you flying on your airline?"

"Well, ma'am, because I want to get to my destination, and I'd like to get there before I have to go back to work in five days. Oh ya, and I'd like to do it without getting bitched at by grumpy under-paid ticket agents and flight attendents."

I'm proud that "I make US fly!" Can't you tell?

Did we have here that when the comms went out at DFW, the FAA needed a tech from Oklahoma and told him to DRIVE, not fly.

A Fark comment just said, "I think it's worth it to fly 1500 miles in 3 hours."

Lessee...
Drive to airport - 1 1/2 hours
PLEASE ARRIVE TWO HOURS BEFORE DEPARTURE - 2 hours
Delay - 1 HOUR (if you're lucky)
Flight time - 3 hours
Wait for gate - 1/2 hour
Gather baggage, arrrange ground transport - 1/2 hour
Arrival airport to destination - 1 hour

Yep. 3 hours. (9 1/2)

Driving at 65 MPH, 23 hours.

Flying GA @ 130 knots with some of the above, (10 + 1 1/2 + 1) = 12 1/2 Hours

These surveys always crack me up- by their nature, they almost always will favor new carriers, who have all-new airplanes, mostly-young staff and no history of real-world problems (the kind that cannot be avoided) to carry along.

Virgin America- "top airline"- yah, right, they've been flying for 2 1/2 months.

Well, yeah, in America. Virgin Atlantic has been around and has been the airline of choice for those flying across the pond.

Sort of a conundrum, here.

They had to prove that they were not the same outfit in order to get a US Air Carrier Certificate. Realistically, they are an independent, but affiliated, entity.

I fully expect them to succeed, by the way, but to declare them the top airline in the country, at this point, is nothing but fanboy-ism.

Interesting, yes.

Independent in terms of ownership, yes.

Product >= JetBlue, which ranks right up there, leads me to believe that they will stick on top. Especially considering the competition. I almost flew 'em to LAX last week, but the return schedule didn't work. So I rode the AA cattle car (737-800 from IAD to LAX is a cattle car any way you slice it).

It's Zagats. It's based on user opinions. That means new=good, especially since the competition s^cks.

I didn't know that. I hadn't been following. I guess they had to get around the prohibition for foreign carriers making domestic stops.

I wonder how much they're prohibited from knowing as to how Sir Richard's other airline operated. :p

they had a fairly extensive battle trying to get their US Operating Cert for exactly this reason; Continental, in particular, objected to the issuance. they have shown, sufficient for the US authorities, that they are "independent" from Sir Richard's organization. But, the innovation is there, and I hope that they are able to succeed in bringing valuable competition to the marketplace.

I'd especially like to see them "connect the dots," and begin to provide service across the Pacific to Australia- much needed.
