May be a non-issue, but for those of you who get flu and/or pneumonia shots, is there any sort of waiting period before you can/should fly afterwards?

Thx. I’ll probably try and get the shot the day after my next lesson, so I’ll have a few days before my next.

I’ve not experienced any discomfort to the level of grounding myself after getting the flu shot. If anything, exercise & keep your arm limber to minimize any soreness. Maybe the next day it will be noticeable for some.

I’m not sure about flu shots specifically, but I’ve been subjected to a 4hr self-grounding rule after some injections. It’s probably not a bad idea in any case.

I've never had any problems from one but just to be cautious maybe don't go flying immediately after the shot.

30 yrs ago there were guys that worked for me that would not get flu shots.

I'm like, what's up with that?

If I get the shot I can't call in and say I have the flu.

Yes, they told their boss that this was the reason they wouldn't get the shot.
Same guys had a strict rule: Never take a sick day when you're sick. Save them for when you've got something fun to do.

No wonder I became the mean manager I am today.

When I get mine they have me wait 15 minutes before letting me go. I wouldn't think it would be a problem to go fly 30 minutes later but people are different. If you've had a flu shot before and had no problem then I would fly. Or wait if you prefer.

This year’s flu shot had a minor lingering knot and some pain. Nothing that prevented any activity just some discomfort as they say. The shot is a skin pop so the arm muscle is not directly affected.

I have been getting the flu shots for at least fifteen years but this year I had a bad reaction to it that made me as weak as a newborn kitten for about three days. No idea why, but I think next year I am going to forego the shot and take my chances.

Obviously GA pilots are not held to this, but as a datapoint when I was an Army aviator we had a manual that addresses such things. The very long winded title is "Temporary flying restrictions due to exogenous factors affecting aircrew efficiency."

In that manual, it says You are restricted from flying for 12 hours after immunization and must see a doctor if a reaction occurs.

Just as a data point, I worked at an aviation company that gave their employees optional free flu shots, and I never heard a word about not flying for some period afterwards.

My vaccine sure seemed to go into the muscle.
Maybe talk to your provider about where injected materials are placed. I suspect many folks don't care but it's something I like to be aware of. It's mostly small talk and I learn a little about needle sizes and shot locations...and that the cute nurses almost universally threaten me with larger needles if I ask for the shot to be in the buttock. Dunno whats up with that...

I think there was a stronger one given to us over 65 this year Norm, maybe that's what did it.

As an aside, I heard yesterday that the CDC is saying that this year's flu shot is only 10% effective. Not a very good job of predicting it seems...

It happens.

But were a pandemic to hit, having a population protected could still save thousands of lives and untold misery.

There’s still so little downside, so why not?

AFAIK, flu vaccines are made by cultivating flu viruses in eggs, and then killing the viruses off with an alcohol solution.

I figured, why go through all that trouble...
