Now it’s settled. (For mscard88)

What are those Texas Universities doing in the SOUTHEAST Conference?

Cheers

I thought Texas was another country entirely?
It was.
Then it wasn't.
Then it was again.
Then it wasn't again.

What's next? Will they or wont' they?

For the same reason there are 14 teams in the Big 10 and only 10 teams in the Big 12. The folks who run colleges aren’t so bright. They don’t understand either math or geography.

But, they understand money, TV contracts, etc etc.

Maybe so but don’t you think some renaming is in order? Their current names come from the number of teams they once had. Change the number, change the name.

Hey those schools wanted to join the SOUTHEASTERN Conference (note no NC schools:)) for the money. ESPN and CBS TV contracts to broadcast SEC games equals big bucks for these schools. Hell look at some of the other conferences, ACC even, schools from all over. Then there's the smaller schools even more spread out.

Them Missouri folks are at least smart enough not to think they are in the southeast.

Yeah, but that stoooooopid map that Ryan posted calls us south central. We ain't no stinkin' south central, we're midwest. If freekin' Kentucky ain't south then we sure ain't!!!

And we definitely never want to be lumped together with Texas regardless of the topic!!

Don't worry, Tim. Not much chance of any self-respecting Texan doing that! :D

Sort of reminds me of the NFL divisions which have geographic names without regard to where the teams are. On the other hand, all while the NHL had non-geographic names (Adams, Patrick, Norris, and Smythe) the teams in the divisions were pretty geographically close. Now that they have somewhat geographic names, they're goofily assigned.

Don't even get me started on how many teams there are in the Big-10 or Big-12.

How many?

Last I checked there are 14 in the Big-10 (Penn State was #11 and they added Nebraska, Maryland, and Rutgers). Amusingly they also let in Hopkins (I can now say I went to a Big-10 school) as well.
I think the Big-12 has only ten right now, up from a low of 8 a few years ago.
