I need to give myself lashes with a cat o' nine tails. I have an airworthy 182 two miles from my house, and I haven't flown it in three weeks. I have worked a gazillion hours in the last couple of months, but I have had a few days where I could have flown and elected to sit at home on my arse. I want to go fly, but I'm just tired enough that going out to the airport, pulling the plane out, and readying it for flight feels like effort instead of fun.

Do you guys ever get in a slump like this?

I feel like a blasphemer.

Everyone needs some downtime. Go be vegetative for a little while, maybe watch some football or something. You'll get the the urge back.

Be a vegetable like whoever screwed up that Auburn play on 4th down punt...

Don't be too hard on yourself there are a lot of plots that are not current to carry pax. yer still good to go :)

My humble advice: Get on it! Soon.

I find if I have a down period, it gets harder to get back in the saddle the longer it is.
Flying some makes me want to fly more.

Maybe you just need a "mission". For example: Come fly to me! :)

I'm sure you could someone to exercise your 182 while you sit on your ass. :D

Thanks for the reminder . . . . I came here trying to forget . . . . The Gus Bus will be quiet tonight. Wonder if I should drive over to Waffle House tomorrow morning?

Haha! Thanks for the replies. I know I'll get back up in the sky before too long. Mainly, it has just been a heck of a 4th quarter at work. Not looking forward to another 11 day, 132+ hour stretch before my next day off. Just makes me want to hit the couch when I get a little break. No real concern, I was just realizing how long it has been, and thought I'd belly ache a little.

I have dang sure been watching some foosball. My Sooners handled their business today. Switching back and forth between Wisconsin-OSU and Miami-Clemson for the next few hours.

Your Sooners handled my Mountaineers nicely last week (that was painful). The Miami-Clemson game is a few blocks from the house, thought about heading down on BOA stadium but decided to watch from home...didn't even go tailgate...I must be getting old.

Sorry 'bout that. ;)

I hear ya. I much prefer to watch from the couch these days.

Yes, I occasionally get into a non-flying slump but getting back in the air immediately makes me want to fly again right away.

It's normal. We all have slumps, even me. Mine are generally maintenance induced but I've had periods where there just aren't Cloud Nine trips for a while and I have nowhere to personally go. This summer during the engine beam repair and annual issue I had 5 months when I didn't fly.

When you get into bigger (more expensive) airplanes it becomes a lot harder to go up to bore holes in the sky mentally, and so you don't do it as much.

I have this happen all the time. I once went so long I wasn't passenger current and had to spend some solo practice time.

Here's how it usually goes... get busy with life, 2 weeks go by and no flying. Then "Hey, honey I haven't flown for a while, would you go with me to _____ for lunch?" Then she gives me the one day that week she can do it which is of course the day thunderstorms roll through so we plan for another week and something comes up so we don't go for another week finally culminating in me just going out to the airport, flying over my house, and doing several touch and gos just to retain currency and some proficiency.

And then some months I put in a good 10-20 hours either making several trips or a major cross country.

The winter slump is coming too- short days, slow moving weather, miserable conditions to be out in, and cold that requires someone go out and plug in the pre-heater a few hours before the flight. Oh and my annual will be due after Jan... which usually takes the plane down for 2-3 weeks. 1-2 weeks that it was supposed to go into the shop but didn't(and therefore I scheduled no flying), then 1 week to actually do the annual even though I think it only takes them about 2-3 days of actual work but they leave it half apart and go work on someone else's plane.
*sigh*

Well, I think you have a littl better excuse with a cabin class twin. Not exactly an evening jaunt kind of plane there.

I finally got some good days off and I have been determined to break the slump. I had 5 days to fly, and I planned to get in at least a couple flights. After 3 days of low clouds, capped off by a nice thunderstorm and heavy downpour, I'm hoping my remaining two days are going to allow some aviating. Forecast looks good for now.

Been a good while since I flew mine, between the icing conditions from the deck up and the overall cold wx, well that's what I tell myself lol

This is true, and that's one of the reasons why pilots of cabin class twins often end up getting rusty - it's just not a "go bore holes in the sky" kind of plane. However, it also is less forgiving and more demanding, so it becomes that much more important to keep the rust off.

This fall has been like that for me... not exactly "sit on my arse" lazy kind of thing, more like very little free time after work, and I've wanted to stay in shape so used most of it hiking. Also, during the semester, I get nervous about maintenance issue away from home base, possibly not making it back in time for classes Monday morning. Generally speaking, if Saturday is nice I might go fly; if the nice weekend day is Sunday, hike instead.

Usually here in VT, both weekend days suck weather-wise. :(

I flew last weekend and it'd been three weeks since I was last up also. Over here it's been the winds. I'd look out the window in the morning, see beautiful blue skies, and say "yep, let's go flying!"

Then I'd get a briefing. Har. Hell, no!!! I'm staying on the ground. One particular morning it was blowing 60kts at 3,000'

Homie don't play dat...

I’d say from your recent FB posts, your slump broke, big time! LOL.

I haven't had my airplane for a month and I'm going nuts (and driving Mrs. Steingar in a likewise direction). My slumps are almost all weather induced, when the wx goes down and stays that way. Hopefully the IR will fix that, if I ever get my aircraft back from the $%&*^&@#@$%&&&!! shop. And all these blue skies while its gone! Odin teases me relentlessly.

Of course, I've had close to a year of maintenance related lay off as well.

Yeah, I'd say. Over 100 hours since mid-November. And I still have my day job, I only took off 3 days total for those flights.

Time to re energize yourself, knock the rust off and get back to flying.

Slump broken!!!! Finally got a little flying this afternoon. Clouds finally broke last night and today was beautiful until just before dark when the next front moved in. It wasn't a long flight, but smooth and enjoyable. Now back to work 10 more days.

Nice. Glad to hear you got back out there. I wish I had an airplane. I’ve already got enough excuses to not go fly it. :D I will fly the paint right off of whatever I get some day...
