Can anyone guess where to?
Stupid easy mode: the metro area
Hard mode: the specific airport

When I was where you were for that photo, I think KCPS tower said something like this:. “Enter left downwind runway 12 right, call when abeam the arch.”

Interesting trivia about KCPS (Cahokia Illinois) — besides the Arch across the river, another nearby landmark is the Cahokia mounds historic site, where 1000 years ago pyramid-like mounds were sculpted from the earth.

They had me on a left base for 12R... picture is through the copilot side window while I think making the base-final turn. Not sure, I wasn't looking at the Arch at that point.

Had a bit of a... something with the approach controller on our way home. Our direct outbound course would have taken us realllly close to Lambert. I'd assumed they'd vector us around or maybe clear me through which would have been pretty cool but I wasn't expecting it. The tower sent me on my outbound course to my surprise, probably should have questioned that but I'd had stuff go like that before in other areas so I didn't argue. When I switched to approach the controller was either annoyed or pulling my leg about it.. not sure which honestly before giving me a new heading. I'm guessing maybe the tower hadn't looked at where my outbound course would take me and I surprised the approach controller when I popped up on his screen.. oh well no harm done, I'll question the heading if I find that happening in the future.

The Arch is a really nice view.

If you were departing VFR from KCPS, which is Class D under the shelf of the St Louis Bravo, the KCPS tower does not give a clearance to enter bravo. So after takeoff any heading given by the tower is only temporary. You must remain VFR and avoid Bravo, until Approach gives you clearance to enter. That’s my experience, when departing KCPS for a destination that would cause me to cut right through the core of the Bravo airspace if I were allowed to take a direct heading.

Yeah we never entered the Bravo but it was coming up pretty quick. Normally when I'm on a course that cuts through bravo airspace I've found it works out best to let the controllers tell me how they want me to handle it rather than try to guess. I had it in my head that is how it would have to be here but thinking about it after the fact I should have known there wasn't enough time to expect them to do that between the departure point and the airspace. Important thing is no bust, no phone numbers, no incident. I think from the guy's tone he was more razzing me than concerned or upset.

The riverfront is KCPS's airspace. KCPS tower is well familiar with the term "riverfront tour" and I've taken many people on one, I come up the river from the south, past Jefferson Barracks, fly on up the river past downtown and the arch, typically turn around at the Stan Musial Bridge (the Stan Span), then back south whence I came. All at about 501' AWL. It's a great flight!

I used to then land at KCPS for lunch but that restaurant closed a while back...bummer.

Cute dog!
