Flew the Cardinal KJTC - WINW on Sat. 11/25. Nice calm flight that took 1.0 hrs. Firstly the airport is named Winslow Lindbergh Regional Airport and there is a big hangar from the 1930's. The hangar has TAT printed on it from the Transcontinental Air Transport which Charles Lindbergh helped design the route across country. Winslow was a stop on the first commercial transcontinental air transport airline that flew Ford tri-motors. Information link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcontinental_Air_Transport
We walked the mile to town and stopped at the "standin on the corner" site made famous by the Eagles. We had lunch at a very good mexican food restaurant and then walked over to the La Posada hotel/restaurant/museum. It was also built in the 1930's and is nicely restored and historic.

Return flight was only 45 min. with the tailwind. Would recommend a stop in Winslow if you're ever in that area. We'll take the taxi to town the next time though.

I was just there last month, although we flew into Show Low. My impression of Winslow, I can see why Glen Frey was so damn happy that girl was going to pick him up. :)

Actually, it was a fun trip and enjoyed the area, especially the Meteor Crater.

You got that right.

OP, are half of the runways still covered in 2-3’ high weeds???

It’s amazing if you sit there long enough at the Winslow hotel, you can see trillions of dollars of hardware just sitting thereC0FBC55B-69E3-4A92-B90A-CA8017258D93.jpeg

Did you notice that the Ford reflected in the "window" on the mural is backward? It shows a right-drive pickup.

Think I might fly up there soon. I used to hunt coyotes on the south side of meteor crater

Is the Mexican restaurant still there near the FBO ? It was excellent. No need to go into town.

And the self serve fuel pumps are hidden behind the FBO/ Mex Restaurant. Been a few years since I’ve been there.

Winslow is also a rail town. Distance/time worked that crews needed to be changed out, so it became home to a lot of railroad workers.

A condition of TWA’s order for the Douglas DC-1 (DC-2 was the production version) was that it be able to take off from the highest airport on their route on one engine. The demonstration was done at Winslow in September 1933.

That's interesting, wouldn't have thought that's possible.

Was there a girl in a flatbed ford?

The Ford was there, but no girl!

I stopped there a few years ago and asked the line guy about the girl in the flat bed Ford...without even looking up...he said Dude, is 20xx, she is in the Old Folks Home at the end of Runway 29.

That ended that line of questioning pretty abruptly.
