What is that screeching noise that sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard or some mechanical part being tortured just before or during taxiing?

PTU. aka. Power Transfer Unit.
If the hydraulic pressure between different systems vary by too much, pump will engage and balance the pressure. That's the PTU and it's often described as "the barking dog sound".
 
Apprehension on the pilot's part when he knows the aircraft is going to critique his landing by calling him names.
