I saw this line of appliances in a Williams Sonoma catalog.

http://www.smegusa.com/

I realize this is an Italian company and all, but if you were going to sell in the U. S. market, wouldn't you check with someone who lives here about your name?

Personally could care less what they call themselves. :dunno:

There's a Dutch manufacturer of small satellite parts called "Innovative Solutions in Space" (ISIS).

At least they didn't call it smegma.

I can't remember the model, but there was an American car that was sold in Mexico. When translated, the name was something like "always broken".

My details are not quite exact, but something very similar.

What’s funny is how many universities (including grad schools) have perpetuated that story.

I was in high school in the mid 70s. I went to a private military boarding school with a lot of students from Mexico, central and south America. I first heard about this story from the Mexican students.

Some of my favorite websites with unintended consequences (all gone now I think) were:
powergenitalia.com (PowerGen Italia)
penisland.com (Pen Island)
whorepresents.com (Who Represents?)
expertsexchange.com (Experts Exchange)

Question about the original post. What's funny about smegsusa? Is this a regional joke? Maybe I'm just dense. I've googled a little bit to see, and can't find anything.

If it's something offensive, I'd appreciate a private message.

Google smegma... That’s all I’ll say about it.

The snopes essay doesn't actually have evidence that it's not true.

They frequently don't. It's not a majority, but if you read through the items there, especially the items related to politics, you'll frequently find factless stories with more of a "we wish this wasn't true" bend to them.

I have found that to be true of snopes. They have a liberal bias and sometimes will say a story is false or unconfirmed and then go on to confirm 90% of it, having based their conclusion on the unconfirmed or untrue ten percent. They don't seem to do that in the other political direction so I've lost faith in them.
