For the last 4 years, my family (wife and 7 year old son) and I have traveled up to Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Va for their Christmas Town display and down to Myrtle Beach for a couple of their shows in early December. It always helped with igniting that Christmas spirit and got us reved up for the holiday. Being stationed in eastern NC made them an easy trip and short flight.

This summer we were transferred to east-central Mississippi and are now looking for a new fly-in Christmas tradition. We’re currently exploring the Pigeon Forge/Dollywood holiday events. We like the sound of potentially more seasonal temps, possibly some opportunity to get snow, and of course the mountains. Additionally, Gatlinburg appears to have an airport (GKT) that might work and there’s always McGhee-Tyson in Knoxville of which I’m very familiar with.

Anyone familiar with Pigeon Forge/Dollywood during the holidays or flying into GKT?

Any other Smokey Mountain recommendations for the holidays?

Any other holiday must-sees within 300 miles or so of East Mississippi?

We are planning a trip to Gatlinburg soon. I'll let you know how it is.

GKT is a very scenic and friendly airport, with easy access in and out. Would recommend it over TYS.

(I can get more descriptive if you need it.)

Go to KRVS.
Make your way to Rhema Bible College. I have never seen anything like it in my life.

I live in east Tennessee and have cabins in gatlinburg. KGKT is easy in and out. gatlinburg and pigeon forge do a great job with decorating. do a search for cabin rental companies and pick a cabin over a hotel. think hot tubs, pool tables, arcade games, fireplaces, heart shaped bathtub, etc...

If you are going to east TN, I recommend checking out DKX over GKT. Much cheaper gas and no tie down fees, plus the people are even more friendly. The drive from DKX to the 407 exit isn't that bad (30 is mins). I grew up there and only use GKT when visiting family and I really have to cut the time close.

Wife and I have been going there in Oct for years. We rent a log cabin at Hidden Mtn Resort, Sieverville. Resort is right behind Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant.
