I have very small amount of XC experience, but I have learned a few things about PIREP.

When you provide a PIREP to Center - that may or may not go over the FSS. I provide PIREP on every leg and then try to find it on skyvector - I don't. I also called FSS and asked that if I provide the PIREP to the center do you guys get that? she flat out said workload permitting, but more often than not, we don't.

next I started calling FSS after every flight to close the FP and told them... on the ground, smooth ride, close plan. checked sky vector - nopes, nada

last I tried called FSS after landing, told them I would like to close the flight plan and I have PIREP. the lady closed the flight plan first, then asked me about PIREP. provided at 5500 -ve turb, -ve ice. found that on skyvector

so... do you guys provide PIREP and to whom? how frequently? as a new pilot I spend better part of the day at work dreaming about XC on skyvector and I don't find much PIREPs unless they are serious in nature, like a IFR day and Icing PIREP. every now and then I will find one -ve icing, -ve turn etc. but generally I don't find much. could be a area thing, but I would guess as pilots we can do better and make each other's life a little easy by providing more PIREPs?

Whenever the conditions are not as forecast. Usually that happens when it's a smooth ride in the middle of a turbulence airmet

I typically advise atc tops and bases plus ice or anything else not as forecast. Note that I said atc and not FSS. If they want more pireps they should make it easier I.e. just advise who you are talking to instead of having to call someone else.

+1... :yesnod:

Only if ATC requests one or if theres something unexpected like icing or windshear. I dont mess with flight service, they're a pain to deal with in the air. If they want PIREPs they should make it easier - like allowing us to file in the air from our ipads

I give PIREPS to FSS. Not just when there is adverse weather. Smooth, clear and visibility unresticted is a PIREP and useful to others. You're right about giving them to Center and/or Approach not making it to the 'PIREP machine' for dissemination. It was like that when I was working many years ago and this comes up every now and then in these Forums and it looks like things haven't changed. Is telling Center/Approach the tops are 2500 and its bumpy really a PIREP. Yeah, you are a 'PI lot' and you're 'REP orting' something. If you say "I have a PIREP," they say "Go ahead" and you give a "PIREP," like location, time, altitude, type aircraft, and then flight conditions it is supposed to get to FSS. Theres a difference between 'how's the ride' 'its bumpy' and a real honest to gawd official PIREP. There are places where 'quick reports' get into the system. SoCal approach is pretty good about getting tops reports in. You just give them the tops and they fill in the blanks and get the PIREP into the system

like file a PIRERP from the air? I believe FSS now integrates with certain avionics (and more to come) thru which the pilot can enter the PIREP themselves. but yeah, an App would be awesome. in fact, I like the new FSS flight plan tool with their txts and stuff to open and close plans, but I would love to see if it was app and not the browser.

good to know. next time I will try I have a PIREP to center and see how it goes. I like to report good weather too.... I like to think it helps another pilot who is still on the ground doing a flight planning

If you encounter rough air or something that should be reported than do so. If you try to report something that’s insignificant, than you probably won’t see it listed later on.

Yeah I do, I think what happens is the controller just advises other aircraft of what I reported, and never enters it in the system. They're required to from what I recall but that may have changed.
