Nextdoor.com - Quite entertaining

Mostly we get a ton of bitching about how Castle Rock is growing.

Also, tons of back and forth over whether we need speed bumps in the neighborhood.

I hate it. I use it mostly to find local stuff for sale cheap

Castle Rock is insane. LOL. Never seen so much crap built in so little time since Highlands Ranch went up in the 90s. At least the build quality of most of it is marginally better than the cardboard boxes in HR. LOL.

Speed bumps! Ahhh there’s a fun new one! Thumbs up! I bet that gets people in a tizzy.

I need to go look at today’s posts out here and see if anything funny came up.

Today was:

The same female Great Pyr got out and convinced other dogs to get out with her again.

Someone needs a backhoe.

Three alpacas available for free, you cart them home. And the two males are “intact for breeding”.

Someone asked about rural cell coverage so I did a brain dump on the insanity caused by the FCC licenses changing from the Big Three to a tiny rural carrier on the older lower frequency bands at the county line. It was a good place for a license change demarcation line in the 80s. Not so good now that people commute across it. :) Causes all sorts of chaos since everyone roams onto them sooner or later out here because nobody else builds towers. Except the power company. For their microwave stuff to monitor their natural gas pipeline. And they don’t take cellular tenants.

The joys of rural connectivity... maybe Google Fiber will trench out here in 30 years or so. Unlikely but I can dream, right? :)

It sounds like Nextdoor.com may be more useful in rural areas. Here in an urban area, it didn't take long before I concluded that I needed to turn off email notifications.

Speed bumps..... back when I was a teenager the local grumpy old man got the city to put a speed bump in front of his house. He did not like people driving the speed limit. (30 MPH) We would load up our pickups with bricks, steel drums, scrap metal and stuff like that, just enough to cover the floor of the bed. We would get at least 10 trucks loaded for noise then we would line up about 100 feet apart and hit the speed bump at 20 miles an hour. Usually around midnight. It took a year but the bump was finally removed.

Most of us were on a first name basis with the local police. We promised to stop driving by his house if the speed bump was removed.

We were not trouble makers, did not vandalize or break into houses or put bananas peels in front of the old folks home, we just liked having fun.

It was obvious the house in Butte had used toilets installed when the house was built. People get them for the larger flush volumes on the old ones.
Hey, that's taking water away from the children!

Some of the higher end low flow toilets work pretty well now. But you've gotta buy the $500 toilet, not the $199 unit.
Or eat more fiber.

Last week someone was urgently looking for help in nursing 2 baby squirrels through the night ... SMH
Here, kitty kitty kitty :D

Luckily for him, it's wabbit season!

I dunno....sounds like duck season..

Someone’s kid also went missing but it happens regularly and it’s a long story.

Yeah, Like $0.99 light bulbs now cost $15.99 each. Nice not to have to change them every few years, but, really? I guess the polar bears are happy....

I've been also seeing recent reports of "attempted rape", "attempted kidnapping" etc. Scary?
Well, after reading the bad Engrish inside the post, it turns out some kid saw some creepy looking guy somewhere.
FecesBook, what would we do without you? :)

Hmmm. Someone hasn’t been shopping for light bulbs in a while, I see.

Some of the local facebook groups are just as fun, complaining about the police helos overhead at all hours of the day, while complaining about slow police response times.... or about the local Indian reservation hosting late night concerts on the REZ and wondering why the city council is not doing anything about it

Classic stuff.

We have at least two “local” Facebook groups owned and run by top level county political party people but made to look like they’re open groups for anyone in the County. Innocuous titles like “Elbert County Citizens”.

However if you post anything against their political agenda they’ll a) tell everyone you’re “argumentative” (anyone posting their stuff isn’t) and remove the comment b) if you contact them privately to discuss it, they’ll fake like you’re “threatening” them and block you. If you post any more to the county group, they’ll ban you and remove all comments you made on anything.

It’s all quite cozy. Makes it look like the county is all in happy harmony with their politics and what not, because there’s nobody who disagrees with them on the page. LOL. Even if you’re not interested in either political cult and just posting sane mathematics, you’ll get banned. They don’t like math.

Even funnier, they don’t know everyone makes fun of them on other forums, including Nextdoor.com which might be the best reason to have a site based on geography and not really owned by anyone. On any other social media site or forum you’ll find a post that warns people these are shill groups on Facebook. You do have to look and many people don’t, but it’s well documented.

I got kicked off for telling some dreamer that posted they wanted a rec center built, that we don’t even pay our firefighters yet, so good luck on finding a rec center budget. I pointed out the county to our west in the suburbs that has a rec center has six times the housing density and the houses are all worth about double the rural houses, thus, a massive tax base. Oh and they pay their firefighters even.

LOL. Damn that logic and stuff. They don’t want facts like that posted in a comment when the original purpose of the post was just to whine about the current county board members.

Those terrible people can’t even build us a rec center!!... don’t ya know? ;-) Vote for us. We’ll build it!

Nobody knows where the money will come from, maybe the cows on the ranches will get part time jobs “mooooooooo-n lighting.” Hahaha. They don’t want to talk about that. Of course.

One of their moderators told me when I sent a PM asking what she meant by her babble about me threatening her, that she was “in a meeting and to stop sending messages”. Well sheesh lady, you know you can turn Facebook notifications OFF when you’re doing like, real life stuff. It’ll happily store your PMs until later. I think I understand why she feels “threatened”. Either her phone is smarter than she is, or she makes sure that FB page is monitored 24/7 by someone with the ability to delete stuff. Either/or, it’s hilarious. Talk about having no life.

I guess I’d call it “classic stuff” too, if classic really is code for stupid. Like “can’t do basic math” levels of stupid... :)

Oh man. The vote happened, the entrance roads are getting paved, and the autistic screeching has reached a fever pitch. It’s true insanity. Way more fun than PoA.

heh - years ago, my nephew wanted badly to get onto FB. His mom, my SIL, wouldn't let him because she was worried that he was too young to know what he was doing and that creeps would start stalking him.

My daughter was staying with them for a while during the summer and told her aunt that she could set up the account with all the privacy features turned on and put in whatever password she wanted so she could monitor.

Later that afternoon, mere hours have gone by: My SIL checks her son's account and sees a couple of messages about "meeting behind the school" from a guy who's profile picture looked like it should be on a most-wanted poster.

She went nuts, "WHO IS THIS GUY?"
"Him? He hangs around at the school."
"WHAT? How do you know him?"
"We met at the park."
"#@#*$^( !!! Who else knows him?"

This goes on for a little while and she starts calling the moms of his friends to figure out who this guy is.

Turns out, he's another kid that's good friends with his whole social group. His mom wouldn't let him put his own picture on his FB profile because she was worried about stalkers, so he found some creepy looking guy instead.

I thought I would sign up and give it a try, but they wanted to access my contacts list. uhuh.

I actually use a photo of a boobie that I got from PoA as my profile pic on Nextdoor. He’s a cute little bird.

Oh, and a goat is loose on Midsummer Lane. Just thought I’d let y’all know. LOL.

Nate, even better than repaving... suggest that they put speed bumps in the neighborhood. Guaranteed fun.

Sign up from a PC/MAC.
I was on a PC. But even though I denied them access to my contact list, it seems they signed me up anyway.
We sure have a lot of lost dogs and cats around here.

They asked to get access to a contact list on a PC? I don't know what that would even mean. Your Outlook contacts? A web site can't get access to that even WITH your permission.

Or did you sign in maybe via a Facebook login? (Don't ever do that, for anything).

No. I was on a Windows 10 pc and signed up from the web site. After entering my information, they said to check my mail to confirm my email. When I selected "confirm", it asked me to give them permissions to access my contacts list. I use yahoo mail on my pc and my i-thingeys and the contact lists get synced between them somehow. At any rate, I wasn't going to give them permission to access it.

Here's yesterday's Nextdoor posting for our area, I kid you not:

Geiger Counter

Transformer fire in Huntersville at McGwire Power Plant. Can someone check and see if there is a high level of radiation? Get a quick reading.

Please please please tell me you answered that question with .... "Not sure, but I do see some fresh human skeletons in the area......"

I was tempted to tell them that if they didn't need a geiger counter, if they looked south toward the power plant at night and didn't see a glow they were alright.
Of course, there is always a glow in that direction it's where downtown Charlotte is.

The last few days it’s been the lady who bakes various cakes and pies taking orders, and a black lab is loose today. A horse was loose Friday.

Not nearly as fun as the drama-queens mad about the $400/year road. Which passed by the way.

I suspect it’ll be completed sometime around the ADS-B mandate deadline. LOL.

Haven updated the drama in a while.

First off, the airplane off airport landing created quite a stir when the airplane was left in the field overnight. My wife pointed out it had come up on there so I just dove in and told the story and made all the folks who were wondering if the people were alright, that they were.

This week’s fun... the mail house. You see, with a few hundred houses and only about 20 parcel boxes, and it being Christmas shipping season and all...

Well let’s just say the HOA or USPS or somebody decided to install wall to wall a new row of parcel boxes. Our parcel box quota has now doubled at least.

So, what comes up in NextDoor? People bitching that others don’t collect their parcels daily, and then they get the dreaded pink card that says you get to drive twelve miles to the post office and get your package.

And that triggered a rant about “snowflakes” from an old retired guy who went off on a tear.

It’s way too much fun. I posted that I wondered if USPS will deliver lumps of coal from Santa.

Today’s drama is apparently there’s a “large” Coyote wandering the ‘hood. Go figure. Plains. Winter setting in. Coyote looking for food. Duh.

Food meaning chihuahua snacks, of course. LOL.

Nobody’s mentioned that the peacock got out again and was retrieved. They’re slipping. But I heard it squawking away in its shelter two nights ago. Why someone has a peacock out here, I’ll never know. Freak you out the first time you hear it making noise at night. You know it’s a peacock but your brain won’t connect peacock and eastern Colorado plains... so you just kinda fire an interrupt routine and your brain resets.

I don't know how Castle Rock keeps growing. Their last good film was The Bucket List in 2008.

Maybe Daughter of the Bride will be good.
