Would this be an acceptable panel mounted IFR clock?

Lol nvm says on Aircraft Spruce it is.

I have the GT-50 clock/timer/thermometer in my airplane. I was installing new plexiglass in my plane and I wanted to get rid of the thermometer sticking thrrought the windshield. I always hated that probe sticking out, especially when installing a canopy cover. I also found the old thermometer dial difficult to read on the other side of the cockpit. I didn't care much for the old windup clock in the panel either. The GT-50 was the solution I came up with. I've had it now since 2013 and have been very pleased with it. I have a yoke mounted iPad running WingX. The timer in the GT-50 works great, but for me, the timers on the map page of WingX are easier to access. With that said, I still highly recommend the GT-50. It is a great addition to your panel. You can see it just above the yoke in the picture below.

I've got a Davtron sitting on the shelf if you're interested. I think it's the M800.

PM if interested.

Thanks I ordered it. When you say the timer isnt easy to access...is that just because of where it is located on your panel or it is actually hard to access in the GT-50 itself? Mine is located in the top left hand corner so it should be incredibly easy to access. I just figured the timer screen could be loaded and it could stay on that screen and all I would have to do is press a button to start/stop and then reset it?

ForeFlight doesn't have a timer that I am aware of which is totally stupid.

Thanks Ravioli you offered it to me previously for the OAT function, but this GT-50 should suit my needs perfectly.

no.. the OAT is only an OAT. The Davtron clock is only a clock.

Okay. No tablet. No clock. No OAT.
Keep stripping stuff out of 'er and pretty soon Candy is going to weigh less than you do. :)

Ahh that’s right yea this will be nice cause it has all that and even has a G meter for when I’m doing Split S’s in the Cherokee

The GT-50 is not hard to access and is easy to use. It's just that the iPad is right in front of me on the yoke. Your GT-50 will be no problem in the panel. I think you are going to like it. I have been really happy with mine.

Just as a side note, from the letter from the faa they have posted on their web site removing the standard piper oat may not be legal without a field approval.

I dont have any OAT at all right now?

If you do not have one already then it's not an issue as adding it is a minor change and a simple log book entry will be fine. Even if you had one I would not consider it an issue, but the faa letter says it's up to the A&P to determine if it's a suitable replacement. I'm sure there are guys out there that would say no.

Ahh gotcha...I’m looking forward to it it will be a very nice addition especially the timer for my instrument training.

Don't discount the usability of the external probe as an early ice detector. When faced with the same conundrum, I kept my external temperature probe just for this reason. This was a few years ago, but I replaced my analog clock with a Davtron 877 as I liked it's looks and multiple easy to use time functions. One can argue for the addition of voltmeter capability, but G meter is moot in a Cherokee, as previously mentioned.

Regarding the difficulty with a cover, I actually found the opposite as the probe helps locate the cover on windy days.

The clock in question looks fine and the price is much better than the Davtron's, but don't know how well it functions in the usual timing functions. I would assume it probably does the timing thing well however.

IFR timers must be permanently mounted. I permanently mine with Velcro, figuring that was as permant as four dinky screws.

Yea currently my “IFR timer” is the analog panel mounted clock which sucks for timing. I use the ASA timer on a kneeboard to actually time my holds and approaches. But having this one panel mounted will be much nicer.

I like the analog clock for timing turns and hold legs. Don’t have to set it, start it or stop it. Wind is a pain no matter how things are timed...

Different strokes for different folks. Holds I admit it’s okay but there are times where i forget where i started my timing. For timed approaches I really don’t like it. Trying to time 5 minutes and 12 seconds with an analog clock is a bit of a pain.

Not to mention having an OAT will be a nice touch. But folks will disagree on here over anything so oh well

I like old school for timing approaches, no batteries or power required:

DOH...lol...alright guys thanks for sharing your favorite method of timing.

PoA: Unsolicited opinions R us.

No kidding.

Anyways...this is what I am getting Panel Mounted. Should work well and Clark will just LOVE the fact that it is analog.

Does it have internal lighting?

Had the GT50 installed and it is awesome. Very impressed. Having the digital timer on the panel is great.
