Hi everybody,

There's a small freight hauling outfit in the Midwest that has a steady contract, but is having trouble getting pilots. They're putting their planes up for sale really cheaply. There is an opportunity to continue the operation under their 135 cert. I am super tempted to buy the planes, track down a few pilots, and make a go of it.

I have zilcho 135 management experience, and understand that this could be a nightmare. One other option might be to buy one plane, and run it under part 91. Is there anybody with 135 experience who would be happy to answer a few specific questions? Can't really share more details publicly. Thanks!

You would not be able to run a cargo only operation under part 91..... for long.

I am guessing the reason they are having problems finding pilots would be because of pay and/or location. I am probably one of very few that find remote desolate areas a bonus.

The easiest way to get a 135 operation going is with someone elses money and 135 certificate.

Ask away, I can try to answer your questions.

Thanks, man. I'm going to have a conversation soon with the owner and will reach out to you with a private message.

Can I ask what you're going to do differently to get pilots?

What kinds of planes are they using?

That

Pay and or location are crap.

Solution, pay more.

Are they running single pilots ?

Do they have enough work ,for a pilot to make a living, above the poverty line?

Many of the 135 cargo operators I know of pay above the poverty line. The problem is that it requires 1200tt and 300 hrs later your pilot you just trained went off to the regionals. It's not a pay issue, it's a "there's something much better just around the corner" issue.

I have flown 135 cargo way back in my career. It's a very tough way to make a buck. I'm sure there's a reason why the company is failing. Be sure that you understand that you can't buy a FAR135 certificate. You're purchasing a company that has an operating certificate that is owned by the government. You really need to reach out to the company's POI and get an idea about what recertification will be required to take over the certificate. He may or may not talk to you unless you have a letter of intent to purchase. This can vary widely based on several things like the company's current standing with the FAA, the number of 119 personnel saying with the certificate, and the local politics at the FSDO. Also understand that the FSDOs have huge staffing shortages and something that might normally take days in the real world might take months with the FAA.
